When the key to the cabinet is gone
Office furniture keys go missing all the time: an employee leaves, a desk is moved, or used furniture arrives without keys. The contents are usually the urgent part, whether that’s client files, payroll records or a cash drawer.
Many file cabinet and desk locks have a code stamped on the face of the cylinder. With that code, a key can often be cut without drilling or damaging the furniture.
Key by code
If the lock face shows a number, we can often cut a working key from that code. It’s usually the least invasive option.
Non-destructive opening
When there’s no code, we try to open the lock without damage first. Some locks can’t be opened that way, and we explain options before going further.
Replace or rekey
We can replace the lock core or the whole lock, or key several pieces of furniture alike so one key opens the set.
Common office furniture locks
Many file cabinets use a removable plunger lock that locks all drawers at once. Desks often use a cam lock on a single drawer, or a central lock that secures the whole pedestal. Lateral files, overhead bins, credenzas and mailbox-style cabinets each have their own variations.
Some furniture uses a removable core that the manufacturer’s control key can pull and swap. Other locks are fixed and need to be replaced as a unit. A clear photo of the lock face is the most helpful thing you can send.
Key one lock for a whole office
If a department shares cabinets, keying them alike means one key per person instead of a ring of a dozen. If certain cabinets hold sensitive files, those can be keyed differently so only the right people can open them.
We confirm authorization before opening or rekeying office furniture, particularly for cabinets that hold someone else’s files. Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed.

- Test and hand off keys. We confirm every drawer locks and unlocks.
What does file cabinet or desk lock service cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. The final price depends on whether a key can be cut by code, whether the lock has to be opened or replaced, how many pieces of furniture are involved, and whether replacement locks are available for that brand.
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside (plus a 4% online processing fee). It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. See our Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy. See how our pricing works.
Safes are a different job
Fire-resistant file cabinets and safes use different lock types. If you’re locked out of a safe, see safe lockout service; for an existing safe, combination changes.
File cabinet & desk lock FAQ
Where is the key code on a file cabinet lock?
On many cabinets and desks, a short number is stamped on the face of the lock cylinder, next to the keyhole. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you whether a key can be cut from it.
Can you make a key for used office furniture that came without keys?
Often, yes. If the lock face has a code, a key can usually be cut from it. If not, we can open the lock and either fit a key or replace the lock.
Can all of our desks use the same key?
In many cases, yes. Office furniture locks can often be keyed alike or replaced with locks that share a key, depending on the brand and lock type.
Will opening my cabinet damage it?
We start with non-destructive methods. If a lock has to be drilled or replaced, we explain why first; drilling is $200 plus the service call, approved before we drill.
Can you replace a broken file cabinet lock?
Yes, for most common lock types. Replacements depend on the cabinet brand and lock style, so a photo of the lock and the cabinet brand helps us confirm parts first.
Do you service lockers and cash drawers too?
Many lockers, cash drawers and display cases use similar cam locks. Describe the item when you order and we’ll confirm before dispatch.
