Ownership & Identity Verification
How We Verify Ownership and Identity
Instant Locksmith TN verifies that you are authorized before we open or rekey anything, but we don't necessarily require a title, utility bill or other traditional proof up front. We use the information available to confirm you belong there, and we decline when we can't.
- Authorization confirmed before entry
- No utility bill required up front
- Information kept private
Why we verify
A locksmith who opens any door for anyone is a security problem for everyone. The car, home or business we open could belong to someone else, so we confirm authorization on every job, including lockouts, rekeys, safe openings and new keys.
That protects you, too: the same check that slows down a stranger keeps someone from getting into your home by calling a locksmith.
Traditional proof isn't always required up front
People get locked out with their documents inside, or move in before the utility bill is in their name. Instant Locksmith TN does not necessarily require a title, registration, lease or utility bill before helping. What we require is reasonable confidence that you are authorized to enter, and we have several ways to reach it.
What we may ask for
The check depends on the job and the situation, so it isn't the same every time. In general terms, we may ask for:
- A government-issued photo ID.
- Information that the owner or resident would know.
- A registration, lease or ID that matches the vehicle or address, which may be checked once the door is open.
- Contact with a property manager, landlord, business owner or vehicle owner who can confirm your authorization.
We don't publish the full process, because a checklist would help the wrong people more than the right ones.
Investigative verification resources
Instant Locksmith TN has access to investigative verification resources through a direct relationship with a licensed private-investigation agency, which can help confirm identity or ownership when needed. Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. In practice, it means a missing document doesn't automatically end the conversation.
When we decline
We won't open, rekey or change a lock when we can't reasonably confirm authorization, when the information doesn't match, or when the situation suggests the person asking shouldn't have access, such as a dispute over who may enter a home. We would rather lose a job than open a door for the wrong person.
If we decline, we explain why and, where possible, what would let us help, such as reaching the property manager or vehicle owner.
Your information stays private
What you share to verify authorization is used to confirm that authorization and complete your service. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how it's used and who it may be shared with.
ILT Lifesaver emergencies
When a child or pet is trapped in a vehicle or residence and may be in danger, call 911 first. Under ILT Lifesaver, anyone may report the situation, and life safety comes first: verification is handled afterwards as appropriate rather than delaying entry. The ILT Lifesaver Terms set out when a situation qualifies.
Verification FAQ
I'm locked out and my ID is inside. Can you still help?
Often, yes. A wallet locked in the car or house is one of the most common situations we see, and we have other ways to confirm you belong there. If the ID is inside, we may confirm it once the door is open.
Do I have to be the owner, or can a family member or tenant request entry?
You don't have to be the titled owner. A household member, driver or tenant who is authorized to be there can request service. If authorization depends on someone else, such as a landlord or the vehicle owner, we may need to reach them.
Can I request a lockout for a friend or neighbor?
You can place the order, but the person who is authorized to enter generally needs to be present or reachable so we can confirm it. The exception is ILT Lifesaver, where anyone may report a child or pet in danger.
Do you verify for rekeys and lock changes too?
Yes. Changing who has keys to a property is as sensitive as opening it, so we confirm the person requesting a rekey or lock change has authority over the property. Renters should check their lease; many require landlord permission.
Will you open a safe or storage unit for anyone who asks?
No. Safes, storage units and similar jobs need the same authorization check. Storage unit work is for the renter of record, usually with the facility's approval. See safe lockout and storage unit padlock removal.
What if you decline my job after arriving?
If we can't confirm authorization, we won't open or change the lock. Because the technician has already driven to you, the service-call deposit is non-refundable in that case; see our Cancellation Policy and Service Terms.
Ready to get back in?
Order online or call. Have your ID handy if you can; if it's locked inside, tell us and we'll work from there. Pricing details are on our pricing page, and every service is on the services directory.
