Keys Locked in the Trunk? Mobile Trunk Lockout Service
If your keys are shut in the trunk or hatch, Instant Locksmith TN can send a locksmith to open it without damage, usually by getting into the cabin first and using the car's own release. You confirm the price before any work begins.
- Cabin and trunk opened in one visit when possible
- ~1-hour deployment goal in core metro cities
- Price confirmed up front
Why a locked trunk is harder than a locked door
Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile trunk lockout service across Middle Tennessee. A trunk lockout is different from a regular car door lockout because most trunk lids have no door handle or interior button to reach. On many sedans there is no exterior key cylinder on the trunk at all anymore.
So the usual approach is indirect: open a door, then use the car's own trunk release from inside the cabin. When that path is blocked, the locksmith works through the rear seat or the trunk lock itself.
What gets in the way
Valet or trunk lockout switch
Many cars let you disable the inside trunk release or lock the fold-down seats. If that's on, the inside release won't work and the job takes longer.
Release needs power or the key
On some vehicles the trunk button only works when the car senses a key or the ignition is on. With the key in the trunk, that circuit may not cooperate.
Dead battery
An electric trunk latch with no power won't release from a button. Many cars have a mechanical backup, either a key cylinder or an emergency release inside the trunk.
Check these before you call
- Are any doors unlocked? If yes, try the trunk release on the dash, door panel or floor near the driver's seat.
- Do the rear seats fold? Look for pull tabs or levers at the top of the seat backs or inside the trunk opening.
- Does someone at home have the spare key or fob? Sometimes that's faster than any service call.
- Does your car have a manufacturer app with remote unlock? Some apps can pop the trunk too.
If none of that works, don't pry the trunk lid. Bent lids and torn weatherstripping cause leaks that outlast the inconvenience.
SUVs, hatchbacks and pickups
Hatchbacks and SUVs share the cabin with the cargo area, so once a door is open the keys are often reachable over the rear seat. A power liftgate may still need a button or the key to open, but reaching the key itself is usually the easy part.
Pickup truck toolboxes, tonneau covers and camper shells are separate locks. Tell us exactly what is locked when you order so the right tools come on the first trip.
How a trunk lockout call works
- Describe it. Order a trunk opening online or call. Include the year, make and model, whether any door is unlocked, and whether the rear seats fold.
- Get the price. You see the standard price for the time of day before dispatch.
- Authorization check. The locksmith confirms you're allowed to access the vehicle before opening it. Learn how verification works.
- Cabin, then trunk. The locksmith opens a door if needed, then works the release, seat pass-through or trunk lock.
- Test before leaving. You check the keys, close the trunk, and confirm it latches and releases normally.
When the trunk latch itself has failed
Sometimes the keys aren't the problem: the trunk simply won't open because a release cable stretched, a latch motor quit or a cylinder is jammed. A locksmith can usually get the trunk open, but a failed latch or actuator may need a mechanic. If the trunk lock cylinder is the issue, we can look at it under vehicle lock repair.
What does a trunk lockout cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. If the cabin is also locked, opening it is part of reaching the trunk; tell us when you order so the quote reflects it. If the trunk turns out to need more than the opening you described, such as a failed latch, the locksmith explains and asks before doing more.

Trunk lockout FAQ
My car doors are unlocked but the trunk button does nothing. Is that a lockout?
It can be. Many trunk releases only work when the car detects a key or the ignition is on. If your only key is in the trunk, the button may be disabled, and a locksmith can open it another way.
Can you get into the trunk through the back seat?
Often, yes. If the seat backs fold, the locksmith can reach through to the trunk's inside release handle. If the seats are locked from inside the trunk or by a valet setting, they'll use another method.
My car has no keyhole on the trunk. Can it still be opened?
Yes. Many cars dropped the trunk cylinder years ago. Entry then goes through the cabin, using the dash release, a floor lever or the rear seat pass-through.
Will opening the trunk set off the alarm?
It might. Opening a door or trunk without the key often triggers the alarm. Once you have the key or fob, pressing unlock or starting the car normally silences it.
Does a trunk lockout cost more than a car door lockout?
It can, because it may involve opening a door first and then the trunk. Your exact price is confirmed before dispatch.
What if my keys are in a locked pickup toolbox or tonneau cover?
Yes, we open truck toolboxes and tonneau covers. Tell us exactly which lock it is: truck boxes and bed covers use their own locks, and knowing the brand or type helps the locksmith bring the right tools.
