Rekeying, repair and replacement explained
Rekeying changes the pins inside a lock cylinder so it works with a new key; the lock itself stays. Replacement swaps the hardware. Repair fixes what is there, and many sticking locks are really a misaligned door or strike.
We look at the condition of your hardware and tell you which option makes sense, not which one costs more.
Decision guide
- Lock works fine, but keys are unaccounted for: rekey (or commercial rekeying for a business).
- Lock is worn, damaged, or low grade: residential or commercial lock replacement.
- No deadbolt, or a weak one: deadbolt installation.
- Key turns hard or the latch misses: door lock repair.
- Many doors and many people: a master key system.
On hardware quality: ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, 2 and 3 ratings describe durability and strength testing, with Grade 1 the most demanding. We'll tell you which grade your door realistically needs.

How ordering works
- Pick the service. Choose from the list above, or describe the problem if you are unsure.
- Tell us where and what. Add your location and the details that affect the job.
- Check the price and deposit. You see the standard price and any after-hours or holiday multiplier before you pay the deposit.
- We dispatch. A technician confirms authorization on arrival and explains any change in scope before doing extra work.
What does lock rekeying or replacement cost?
Each service has its own standard price, quoted before dispatch and confirmed before work begins. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside. It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. The time of the call sets the multiplier:
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Locks & Rekeying services FAQ
Can a rekeyed lock still be a weak lock?
Yes. Rekeying changes who has working keys, not how strong the lock is. If the lock is low grade or worn, pair the rekey with a replacement or a reinforced strike.
How long does rekeying take?
Typically a short visit per lock, depending on the lock type and how many doors you have.
Can you rekey a lock without the key?
Often yes, though it may take longer. Some locks are easier to replace than to rekey without a working key.
What grade of lock should I buy?
For most home exterior doors, a Grade 2 or Grade 1 deadbolt is a sensible choice. High-traffic commercial doors generally call for Grade 1.
Do you rekey for landlords between tenants?
Yes, with volume pricing for landlords. See our rental property lock changes service; we verify the owner or manager's authorization first.
