Locksmith FAQ: Pricing, Response, Keys and Verification

Car lockouts start at $55 and house lockouts at $80, plus a flat $15 service call inside city limits ($25 outside). Rekeying is $55 per cylinder. Lock drilling, used only as a last resort, is $200 plus the service call (no lockout fee on top). Mileage is $1.25 per mile beyond 5 miles from the nearest served city's center. Other services are quoted before dispatch, and your price is confirmed before any work begins; see our pricing page. Orders placed 8:00 PM–7:00 AM are billed at 1.5×, U.S. federal holidays at 2×, and both together at 3×; the service call and mileage are never multiplied.

Yes. At Instant Locksmith TN, orders placed between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM cost 1.5× standard pricing, and federal-holiday orders in that window cost 3×, because they combine the holiday and late-night multipliers. Only if the job turns out different from what was described, such as a different lock, extra parts or high-security hardware. The technician explains the change and you approve it before any extra work. Our Service Terms cover this.

The deposit is the service call: $15 inside city limits or $25 outside, paid at checkout when you order online. It confirms your order and lets us dispatch a technician. Phone orders pay the service call up front too. It is a flat fee added to the service price (not credited against it), and the balance is due when the job is done — by card through checkout, Apple Pay, Cash App, Venmo, Zelle or cash. You can cancel at any time. If you cancel before the technician checks in and starts driving to you (you're notified when they do), the service-call deposit is refunded in full; once they are on the way, it is non-refundable. If the technician runs more than 20 minutes past the ETA we gave, you may cancel for a full refund. If no one is at the address, the technician waits 12 minutes and the deposit is kept. Technicians are strategically placed across the area, including one based in Murfreesboro. It is not guaranteed: demand, technician availability, traffic, weather, location and job complexity all affect timing, and farther cities get an honest estimate when you order.

The key's transponder chip probably isn't paired with the car's immobilizer, so the doors open but the engine won't run. That is fixed with transponder key programming.

Yes. We open, reset, reprogram, repair or replace keypad, smart and electronic locks for homes and businesses, after confirming you're authorized. The price depends on the brand, model and problem, so it's quoted before dispatch. See electronic lock service.

A master key system does that: each person's key opens exactly their doors, with a master for managers. We don't design new systems in-house or keep key schedules, but we service, rekey and maintain existing master-keyed hardware using the schedule you keep. Keypad and small card/fob access control systems let codes replace keys.

Call the police first and let them document the scene. Then a locksmith can secure the door, repair damaged hardware and rekey any locks whose keys may have been taken. See break-in lock repair.

Yes. We rekey or replace locks across a unit, or several units, in a single scheduled visit, and volume pricing is available for landlords and property managers. We never change a tenant's locks without landlord or manager authorization, and we don't violate state law for anyone. See rental property lock changes.

A legitimate locksmith confirms you are authorized before opening anything. Instant Locksmith TN does not necessarily require traditional proof like a title or utility bill up front, but we always verify authorization first. Our verification page explains how.

Yes, when we can't reasonably confirm that the person asking has the right to enter. We would rather turn down a job than open a car or home for the wrong person.

Yes, if a parent or guardian is present or on the phone to confirm the situation. In an emergency involving danger to a person, call 911 first.

Yes, once we receive permission from the key's owner or the property's manager. We never copy government-issued keys of any kind. See key duplication.

On Fort Campbell, we tell the gate or visitor-center security personnel what we're there for, and they have the final say on whether we can perform the work; we don't serve Kentucky addresses. At a storage facility, we need the facility management's authorization or your rental paperwork before cutting or opening anything.

ILT Lifesaver is Instant Locksmith TN's free emergency entry program for a child, pet or at-risk adult (such as an elderly person who has fallen) trapped in a vehicle or residence. Call 911 first. Anyone. Owners, parents, neighbors, passersby and bystanders can all report a possible ILT Lifesaver situation; you don't need to own the car or home. A report alone doesn't authorize forced entry — the technician confirms the danger on arrival.
