What we need to know before we come out
Safe openings start on the phone or the order form, not at your door. The safe type decides the method, the time on site and the price, so we confirm it first.
Tell us whether the lock is a digital keypad, a mechanical dial, or a keyed lock, and whether the safe is a gun safe, a fire-resistant document safe, a wall or floor safe, or a business cash or depository safe. Texting or emailing us a photo of the front of the safe and the lock face helps. If you can see a brand name or model plate, include it.
Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile safe lockout service for all types of safes, for homeowners, renters, gun owners and businesses throughout Middle Tennessee. High-security safes with hardened plates and relocking devices take longer, and we tell you before dispatch what to expect.
Digital keypad safes
Many keypad lockouts come down to dead batteries, a forgotten code or a lockout penalty after too many wrong entries. We check the simple causes first, including any manufacturer override provision.
Dial combination safes
Mechanical dials fail from lost combinations, worn wheels or a dial that has slipped. Opening one without the combination is skilled, slow work, and manipulation is never guaranteed to open the safe without damage.
Gun safes
Gun safes are usually heavier-gauge and often have relockers. We confirm the brand and lock type before quoting, and we open it with the owner or an authorized person present.
How a safe opening usually goes
- Confirm the safe and your authorization. We ask about the safe, where it is, and your connection to it before anyone is dispatched.
- Quote before work. You see the standard price for the job (keypad safes from $115, dial safes from $125, gun safes from $315) plus any after-hours or holiday multiplier before you approve anything.
- Try non-destructive options first. Battery and keypad issues, override keys, and dial problems are handled without damaging the safe whenever the safe allows it.
- Explain any change of plan. If the only practical route involves drilling and repair, we stop, explain why, and get your approval on a revised price first. Drilling a safe usually means replacing its lock afterward; we carry safe locks.
- Test before we leave. Once open, we check that the lock and bolt work as expected, or tell you plainly if the lock needs replacement or a new combination.
If you also want a fresh code or combination once the safe is open, we can usually do that on the same visit. See our safe combination change service for what that involves.
Proof of ownership and authorization
A safe exists to keep people out, so we take authorization seriously. We need to know you have the right to open it: it is your safe, it is in your home or business and you control the contents, or you are acting for the owner or an estate.
We do not necessarily require a utility bill or a purchase receipt, but we do verify authorization before opening anything. For estates and inherited safes, expect us to ask who has authority over the property. For business safes, we need the owner or managing member, or direct confirmation from them.
Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. Read how it works on our verification page.
What affects the cost of a safe opening
Safe work is priced by what it takes, not by a flat lockout rate. The main factors are the lock type (keypad, dial or keyed), the safe's construction and security rating, how accessible it is (a floor safe in a closet is slower than a freestanding box), and whether parts or a new lock are needed afterward.
A small fire-resistant document box is a very different job from a heavy gun safe. That is why we ask questions first and confirm the price before work begins. If the situation on site turns out different from what was described, we explain the change and get approval before continuing.
What does a safe lockout cost?
Standard price: from $115 for an electronic keypad safe, from $125 for a dial or combination safe, and from $315 for a gun safe. Safe openings depend on the safe and lock type, so we confirm your price after you describe the safe and before work begins; a replacement lock after drilling is extra. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside (plus a 4% online processing fee). It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it.
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Safe lockout FAQ
My keypad safe beeps but will not open. Is it the batteries?
It might be. Weak batteries are a common cause, and many keypad safes also lock out for a period after several wrong codes. Replace the batteries and wait out any lockout period first. If it still will not open, order a safe lockout and tell us what the keypad does when you enter the code.
I inherited a safe and nobody knows the combination. Can you open it?
Usually, provided the person requesting it has authority over the estate or the property where the safe sits. We will ask about that before dispatch. Tell us the safe type and brand if you can see it.
Will you have to drill my safe?
Not necessarily. We start with non-destructive methods whenever the safe allows. Drilling is a last resort, and we will not do it without explaining the reason and getting your approval on the revised price. A drilled safe usually needs a new lock afterward, and we stock safe locks.
Which kinds of safes do you work on?
We work on all types of safes, but no locksmith should promise every opening will be damage-free. Dial manipulation in particular is never guaranteed to open a safe without damage, and some high-security safes with hardened plates and relocking devices take much longer. We tell you up front what to expect.
Do I need to be there when you open the safe?
Yes, the owner or an authorized person needs to be present. We will not open a safe and leave it unattended.
Can you change the combination after you open it?
In many cases, yes. Electronic keypads usually allow a new user code once open, and many dial locks can be changed with the right tools. Ask for a combination change when you order so we can plan the visit.
