How a smart key is different

Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile smart key replacement across Middle Tennessee. A smart key, also called a proximity key or intelligent key, is the fob that lets you unlock the door by touching the handle and start the engine with a button while the key stays in your pocket or bag.

The car constantly checks for the fob using low-frequency antennas in the doors and cabin; the fob answers by radio. That's more than a standard remote, which only sends button commands, and more than a transponder key, which is read only when it's in the ignition. Replacing a smart key means getting the right fob and pairing it with that whole system.

"Key not detected" doesn't necessarily mean a lost key

If the dash says the key isn't detected but you're holding it, try these first:

  • Replace the fob battery. A weak coin cell is the most common cause of intermittent detection.
  • Use the backup start position. Most push-to-start cars let you start with a dead fob by holding it against the start button or placing it in a marked spot in the console or cupholder. Your owner's manual shows where.
  • Move phones and chargers away. Strong interference near the fob can occasionally block detection.

If none of that works, or the fob is physically damaged, it likely needs replacing.

The key inside your key

Almost every smart fob hides a small metal emergency blade that slides out. It opens the driver's door when the fob battery or car battery is dead; on some cars the keyhole sits behind a small cap on the handle. A replacement fob needs its blade cut to your locks, so you're not stuck if the battery dies later. Some vehicles use a laser-cut emergency blade.

Common smart key situations

One fob left

You still have a working smart key and want a second. This is the simplest case, because the existing key can often help authorize the new one.

Fob damaged

Cracked case, water exposure or a button board that stopped responding. Sometimes only a new shell is needed; often the whole fob is replaced.

No fob at all

Every smart key is gone. This is an all-keys-lost job with extra steps; see lost car key service for how origination works.

What happens at the appointment

  1. Confirm the fob. Year, make, model, and ideally the VIN and the part details from your existing fob, so we bring the correct proximity key.
  2. Verify authorization. We confirm you're entitled to the vehicle before a key is programmed. See our verification policy.
  3. Cut the emergency blade. Matched to your door lock.
  4. Program the fob. Using diagnostic equipment through the vehicle's port. Some systems need a security code or a waiting period, so allow extra time.
  5. Test it all. Touch unlock, push-button start, remote buttons, and the emergency blade in the door.

What does smart key replacement cost?

Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Smart keys are usually the most expensive car keys to replace because the fob itself is a costly part and programming can be involved. The price depends on your vehicle and whether you have a working key. We confirm the part and the full price before dispatch, and nothing changes without your approval.

Smart key replacement FAQ

What's the difference between a smart key and a key fob?

A regular key fob is a remote that sends lock and unlock commands when you press a button. A smart key is detected automatically by the car, allowing keyless entry and push-button start while it stays in your pocket.

How do I start my car if the smart key battery dies?

Most vehicles have a backup: hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked slot in the console. The emergency blade inside the fob opens the driver's door. Check your owner's manual for the exact spot.

Can you program a smart key I bought online?

Yes, we program customer-supplied smart keys when the fob is the right part for your vehicle. Many used proximity fobs can only be paired to one vehicle, and online listings often have the wrong frequency or part number, so send us the part details before dispatch.

How many smart keys should I have?

Two is the practical minimum. Losing the last smart key turns a simple add-a-key job into an all-keys-lost job, which takes longer and costs more.

Will the old smart key still work after a new one is programmed?

Keys present during programming are typically kept. Keys that aren't present, like a lost one, can usually be removed so they no longer unlock or start the car.

My car says key not detected only sometimes. What's wrong?

The usual cause is a weak fob battery. If a fresh battery doesn't help, the fob may be damaged, or the issue could be in the car's antennas or receiver, which the locksmith can help narrow down.
