Repair, not replacement, is often the answer
A lock that's hard to use isn't always a broken lock. Very often the door has shifted, the strike has moved, or a screw has worked loose. Fixing the cause can make the lock work like new.
Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile door lock repair throughout Middle Tennessee. If a lock really is beyond saving, the locksmith will say so and quote a replacement for your approval.
Common lock problems we fix
Deadbolt hard to turn
If it turns easily with the door open but binds when closed, the bolt is rubbing the strike. That's an alignment problem, not a lock problem.
Latch won't catch
The door closes but doesn't stay shut. Usually the strike plate is out of line with the latch because the door has sagged or the frame has shifted.
Key sticks or is stiff
Dirt, old grease or wear inside the cylinder can make a key hard to insert or turn. Cleaning and the right dry lubricant often helps. A worn key can cause it too.
Loose knob or lever
Mounting screws loosen with use. Left alone, the latch mechanism can misalign and fail. Tightening or replacing the mount fixes it.
Lever droops
A sagging lever usually means a weak or broken return spring. Some models have a replaceable spring; others need a new lever.
Knob turns, latch doesn't move
The spindle or tailpiece connecting the handle to the latch may be broken or disconnected. This often needs a part or a new latch.
Why doors drift out of line in Tennessee
Wood doors and frames swell in humid weather and shrink when the air dries out. Middle Tennessee's humid summers and drier winters mean many people notice a lock working fine in one season and fighting them in another.
Hinge screws also loosen over time, letting the door sag on the latch side. A common fix is replacing a top hinge screw with a longer one that reaches the framing, which pulls the door back into position.
What to avoid before we arrive
Don't spray oil-based lubricant or household cooking oil into a lock cylinder. It can attract dust and gum up the pins over time. Locksmiths usually use graphite or a lock-specific dry lubricant.
Don't force a key that won't turn. If it snaps, you'll need broken key extraction before the repair. And if you're locked out because the lock failed, order house lockout service instead.
- Describe the symptom. In the order form, tell us what the lock does and when. A short video helps.
- Get the price. The repair price is confirmed before work begins. If parts or a replacement turn out to be needed, that's explained and approved first.
- Diagnose at the door. The locksmith checks the lock with the door open and closed, the hinges, the strike and the key.
- Repair and test. Adjust, clean, lubricate, tighten or replace the failed part, then test every function.

Door Lock Repair FAQ
Should I use WD-40 on a sticky lock?
It's not ideal for lock cylinders. Oily sprays can leave residue that collects dirt and makes pins stick. Graphite or a dry lubricant made for locks is the usual choice.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace my lock?
If the issue is alignment, loose screws or dirt, repair is usually cheaper. If internal parts are broken or worn, a replacement can be the better value. We'll tell you which before doing the work.
My key works in one lock but is hard in another. Why?
The harder lock may be dirty or worn, or the key may be a worn copy. Trying the original key, if you have it, helps narrow it down.
Why does my door lock work in winter but not in summer?
Humidity makes wood doors and frames swell, which can push the bolt or latch out of line with the strike. An adjustment usually fixes it year-round.
Can you repair a smart lock?
Mechanical issues like a binding bolt are often the same as a traditional deadbolt. Electronic faults depend on the brand, so tell us the make and model when ordering.
My lever handle is drooping. Do I need a new lock?
Not always. Some levers have a replaceable return spring. If parts aren't available for your model, a new lever set may be needed.
