Key Fob Programming: Get Your Remote Locking and Unlocking Again

If your remote buttons stopped locking or unlocking the car, or you have a new or replacement fob that the car doesn't recognize, Instant Locksmith TN can program it at your vehicle, for any vehicle that doesn't require dealer-issued tools. Try a fresh battery first; if that doesn't fix it, programming probably will.

What "key fob programming" means here

Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile key fob programming across Middle Tennessee. On this page, a key fob is a keyless entry remote: the buttons that lock, unlock, pop the trunk or sound the panic alarm. It might be a separate remote on your keyring or built into the head of your key (a "remote-head key").

Two related technologies have their own pages. The chip that lets the engine run is covered under transponder key programming. Fobs for push-button start cars, which the car detects in your pocket, are covered under smart key replacement.

Quick checks before you order

  • Replace the battery. Most fobs use a coin cell printed on the old battery. Match it exactly and note which side faces up.
  • Try your other fob. If the spare works, the problem is in the first fob, not the car.
  • Check the buttons. A button that feels mushy or doesn't click may have a worn contact under the rubber pad.
  • Look for a physical break. A split case can let the circuit board shift or let moisture in.

If your fob is just dead and the car still starts with the key, you're not stranded. The mechanical key or door lock still works; programming can be scheduled when convenient.

When you need programming

New or replacement fob

A fob from a parts supplier or the dealer counter isn't paired to your car until it's programmed. The frequency and part number must match your vehicle.

Lost a remote

Programming a new fob is a good time to remove the lost one from the car's memory, so it can't unlock your doors.

Used car, one remote

Bought a vehicle with a single fob? Add a second one now. Program a matching spare key at the same visit with car key duplication.

How remote programming works

  1. Match the part. Year, make and model (and sometimes the FCC ID printed on the back of your current fob) tell us which remote your vehicle uses.
  2. Choose the method. Some vehicles accept an on-board sequence using doors and the ignition; many require diagnostic equipment through the port under the dash.
  3. Program all remotes together. On many vehicles, programming one fob clears the others, so bring every remote you want to keep.
  4. Test every button. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic and any remote start or liftgate buttons, from a normal distance.

Used and online fobs

Many remotes can only be paired to one vehicle; after that they're locked to it. A used fob from another car, or a cheap listing online, may not program at all even if it looks identical. We program customer-supplied fobs; tell us where yours came from when ordering so we can tell you the odds before dispatch, and see our guide to car key types for the basics.

What does key fob programming cost?

Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Programming a fob you already have costs less than supplying and programming a new one, and remote-head keys that also need cutting cost more. We confirm the part and price before dispatch, and any change on site is explained and approved first.

  • Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
  • After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
  • Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
  • Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
  • No weekend surcharge
  • Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center

Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.

Ordering online? Your deposit is the $15–$25 service call ($15 inside city limits, $25 outside, plus a 4% online processing fee), paid at checkout. It is a flat fee on top of the service price; the Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy explain when it is refundable. See our pricing page

Key fob programming FAQ

Does replacing a key fob battery require reprogramming?

Usually not. Most fobs keep their pairing through a battery change. If yours stops working after a battery swap, check the battery type and orientation first, then the contacts.

Can I program a key fob myself?

Some older vehicles have an owner-programming sequence using doors and the ignition. Many newer ones need diagnostic equipment. If your owner's manual doesn't list a procedure, professional programming is likely required.

What is an FCC ID and why does it matter?

It's a code printed on the back or inside of most remotes that identifies the radio part. Matching the FCC ID and part number helps make sure a replacement fob works with your car.

Can a used key fob be reprogrammed to my car?

Sometimes. Many remotes can be paired to only one vehicle and then can't be reused. Tell us the fob's source and part number so we can check before dispatch.

Will programming a new remote stop my lost one from working?

On many vehicles, programming clears remotes that aren't present, so the lost remote stops unlocking the car. Bring every remote you want to keep.

My remote works but the car won't start. Is that a fob problem?

Probably not. Remote buttons and engine-start authorization are separate systems. A no-start with a working remote usually points to the transponder chip or ignition.
