Keypad Access Control for Small Businesses

Instant Locksmith TN installs and services standalone keypad locks and small-business access control on doors across Middle Tennessee, so staff enter with a code instead of a key. Larger networked systems vary widely, so we’ll confirm scope with you before quoting.

Codes instead of keys

For many small businesses the real problem isn’t the lock, it’s the keys: who has one, who left with one, and how often the locks need rekeying because of it. A keypad lets you change a code in minutes instead of recutting keys.

Most small offices, shops, clinics and back-of-house doors don’t need a server or a cloud subscription. A standalone keypad lock, or a small system covering a few doors, often does the job.

Mechanical pushbutton locks

No batteries or wiring. You press a button sequence to open the door. Durable and simple, with a limited number of possible codes and usually one shared code.

Standalone electronic keypads

Battery-powered locks that store multiple user codes on the lock itself. Many allow individual codes you can delete when someone leaves, and some keep an audit log.

Small-business systems

A few doors managed together, sometimes with cards or fobs. Depending on the product and your door, this can involve wiring, power and an electric strike. We confirm scope before quoting.

What we don’t overpromise

Enterprise access control, meaning many doors across buildings tied to a network, badge databases, alarm and camera integration, and elevator control, is a specialized field involving low-voltage contractors and IT. We don’t pretend every system is a locksmith job.

If your project goes beyond standalone keypads and small systems, we’ll tell you so honestly, and help you understand what part of it, like door hardware, locks and cylinders, we can handle.

Doors, egress and fire rules

Access control has to work with the door you have. Aluminum storefront doors, hollow metal doors, wood doors and doors with panic hardware each need different products. Exit doors must still let people out freely, and fire-rated doors have rules about what hardware can be installed.

We follow applicable code and won’t install anything that blocks egress. Your local code official makes the final determination. For keypads on exit devices, see exit device service.

  1. Tell us about the doors. How many, what type, who uses them, and whether you want individual codes or audit logs. Start an order or call.
  2. Confirm scope. For anything beyond a single standalone keypad, we confirm what’s involved before quoting.
  3. Install. We fit the hardware, align the latch or strike, and confirm the door still exits freely.
  4. Set up codes. We program the initial codes and show you how to add and delete users.
  5. Test. Every code is tested with the door closed and latched.

What does keypad access control cost?

Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Price depends on the number of doors, the product, whether the door needs prep, and whether wiring, power supplies or electric strikes are involved. Hardware choices vary widely, so we confirm the full scope and price before work begins.

  • Before 8 PM: standard pricing
  • After 8 PM: 1.5× standard
  • Federal holidays: 2× standard
  • Federal holiday after 8 PM: 3× standard

Multipliers apply to the standard service price only; the $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call stays flat at any hour. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays.

Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside. It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. See our Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy. See how our pricing works.

Access control FAQ

Do keypad locks work during a power outage?

Mechanical pushbutton locks need no power at all. Battery-powered standalone keypads run on their own batteries, so a building outage doesn’t affect them, but the batteries need replacing periodically. Wired systems depend on their power supply and backup design.

Can I give each employee their own code?

Many standalone electronic keypads support multiple user codes, so you can remove one person’s code without changing everyone else’s. Mechanical pushbutton locks usually use one shared code.

Can a keypad be added to a door with a panic bar?

Often, yes, using exit device trim with a keypad or a compatible electrified option, depending on the device. The door must still open freely from inside. We confirm compatibility before quoting.

Do you install networked or cloud-based access control?

Our focus is standalone keypads and small-business systems. For larger networked projects, we’ll confirm scope with you and tell you honestly which parts we can handle.

Is a keypad more secure than a key?

It solves different problems. Keypads end the lost-key and copied-key problem and let you change access quickly, but codes can be shared. Changing codes when staff leave is the key habit.

Will a keypad keep a key override?

Many keypad locks include a key cylinder for override. We can often key that cylinder to your existing system so managers don’t carry an extra key.
