Cutting a key vs. programming a key

A key can need two things. Cutting shapes the blade to fit the lock. Programming teaches the vehicle to recognize the key's transponder chip or remote. Most vehicles from the late 1990s on use a chip, so a cut-only copy may open the door but not start the engine.

Programming depends on make, model and year. For most makes and models, tell us the year, make and model when ordering and we'll confirm before dispatch.

How ordering works

  1. Pick the service. Choose from the list above, or describe the problem if you are unsure.
  2. Tell us where and what. Add your location and the details that affect the job.
  3. Check the price and deposit. You see the standard price and any after-hours or holiday multiplier before you pay the deposit.
  4. We dispatch. A technician confirms authorization on arrival and explains any change in scope before doing extra work.

What does key cutting and programming cost?

Each service has its own standard price, quoted before dispatch and confirmed before work begins. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside. It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. The time of the call sets the multiplier:

  • Before 8 PM: standard
  • After 8 PM: 1.5×
  • Federal holidays: 2×
  • Federal holiday after 8 PM: 3×

Multipliers apply to the standard service price only; the $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call stays flat at any hour. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays.

Keys & Programming services FAQ

Why will my new car key unlock the door but not start the car?

It is probably cut but not programmed. The immobilizer must recognize the key's transponder chip before the engine will run.

Should I get a spare before I lose my only car key?

It is worth it. With a working key we can add or clone a key; once every key is gone, a new one must be originated and programmed, which takes more work.

Can you program a remote I bought online?

Sometimes. Many aftermarket remotes are incompatible or poor quality. Tell us the part number and vehicle so we can confirm before dispatch.

Can you copy a key stamped Do Not Duplicate?

A stamp alone is not legal protection, but restricted key systems are controlled. We follow the system's authorization rules and ask who controls the keys.

Do you cut house keys on site?

Yes, standard residential and padlock keys can be cut during any visit.
