What car key replacement covers
Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile car key replacement across Middle Tennessee. This service is for drivers who need a new working key because the one they have is failing: a snapped blade, a cracked or chewed-up head, a chip that stopped being recognized, or a blade worn so smooth it barely turns.
It sits between two sibling services. If you still have a perfectly good key and just want a backup, car key duplication is simpler. If every key is gone, see lost car keys, because making a key with nothing to copy is a different process.
Signs it's time for a replacement, not a copy
Worn blade
A key that sticks, needs jiggling, or only turns at a certain angle. Copying a worn key copies the wear, so a fresh key is cut to the factory code instead.
Broken or cracked
A blade snapped in two, a shell split open, or a key ring loop torn off. If part of the blade is stuck in the lock, start with broken key extraction.
Starts sometimes
The key turns but the engine won't stay running, or a security light flashes. The chip may be damaged; a new key with a new chip fixes that.
How the replacement key is made
Two separate things have to be right. The cut is the physical pattern on the blade that turns the lock. The electronics are what the car checks before allowing the engine to run or the doors to respond to a remote.
- Identify the key. Year, make and model tell us whether it's a basic metal key, a transponder chip key, a remote-head key, a laser-cut key, or a push-to-start smart key.
- Get the cut. The locksmith cuts by code or by reading the existing key or lock, so the new blade matches the factory pattern rather than copying wear.
- Program it. Chip keys and remotes are added to the vehicle's memory using programming equipment. Some cars need all existing keys present during this step so they stay working.
- Test it. You lock, unlock and start the car with the new key before the locksmith leaves.
Have your existing keys handy
On many vehicles, programming a new key can erase keys that aren't present. Bring every working key and fob to the appointment so they can all be kept or re-added. If one key has been stolen, you may actually want the old one removed from the car's memory; tell the locksmith.
Ownership comes first
A car key is a high-trust item, so we confirm you're authorized for the vehicle before cutting or programming. We don't necessarily need a specific document, but we do verify. Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. See our verification approach.
What does car key replacement cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. The final figure depends on the key type: a plain metal key, a chip key, a remote-head key and a smart key are different parts with different programming. Give us the year, make and model and we'll confirm the price and the part before dispatch, and nothing extra happens without your approval.
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×

Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Ordering online? Your deposit is the $15–$25 service call ($15 inside city limits, $25 outside), paid at checkout. It is a flat fee on top of the service price; the Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy explain when it is refundable. How our pricing and time-of-day rates work
Car key replacement FAQ
Is it cheaper to get a replacement car key from a locksmith or the dealer?
It depends on the vehicle, but a mobile locksmith often costs less than a dealer and avoids the tow when no working key is available. Compare our confirmed price with your dealer's quote for the same key.
Can you replace just the broken shell of my key?
Often. If the chip and blade are intact and only the plastic case is broken, the internals can sometimes be moved to a new shell. The locksmith will tell you whether yours is a good candidate.
Why does my new key unlock the door but won't start the car?
The blade is cut correctly but the chip hasn't been programmed to the car, or a cheap key without the right chip was used. Starting the car requires a matched, programmed transponder.
Do I need to bring all my keys when getting a replacement?
Yes, if possible. Some vehicles erase keys that aren't present during programming. Having every key there lets the locksmith keep them working.
Can you replace a key for a car with an old, worn ignition?
Usually. Cutting by code produces a factory-spec key, which may work better than the worn one. If the ignition cylinder itself is worn, an ignition repair may be recommended.
How long does a car key replacement take on site?
Many replacements take under an hour once the locksmith arrives, but some vehicles have longer programming procedures. We'll tell you if yours is one of them.
