Lost All Your Car Keys? We Make a New One From Scratch, On Site
If every key to your car is gone, Instant Locksmith TN can originate a new key at the vehicle, cut from the lock or key code and programmed to the car, for any vehicle that doesn't require dealer-issued tools. There's no copy to work from, so this is a different job than a spare key, and we confirm the price before dispatch.
- No existing key needed
- Done at the vehicle, no tow
- Price confirmed before work
"All keys lost" is its own kind of job
Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile all-keys-lost service throughout Middle Tennessee. Locksmiths call this origination: creating the first key for a car when nothing exists to copy. It's different from duplicating a key you still have and from replacing a broken key, where the old key or its cut can still be read.
Because the car must be opened, the cut must be recovered, and the electronics must accept a key they've never seen, this service usually takes longer than a copy. It also usually means no tow, since the work happens where the car is parked.
Search smart before you order
- Retrace the last place you know you had them: store checkout, gym locker, restaurant host stand. Call those places first.
- If you use a tracker tag, check its app. If your car has a manufacturer app, it may show the car's location but rarely the key's.
- Ask whoever else drives the car whether a spare exists at home, in a drawer, or in a glovebox of another vehicle.
- Check whether your auto policy or roadside plan covers key replacement; some do.
If a spare does exist, having someone bring it is usually cheaper and faster. Then make a backup with a car key copy so it doesn't happen again.
How a new key is originated
- Confirm the vehicle. Year, make, model, and ideally the VIN (visible at the base of the windshield on the driver's side). This tells us the key type, lets us run a VIN key-code lookup, and confirms the vehicle doesn't require dealer-issued tools.
- Verify authorization. Making a key from nothing is exactly what a thief would want, so we confirm you're entitled to the vehicle before any key is made. See vehicle ownership verification.
- Open the car. The locksmith gains entry without damage, the same way as a car lockout.
- Recover the cut. Using a VIN key-code lookup, or by decoding a door or ignition lock, the locksmith determines the blade pattern.
- Cut and program. A new blade is cut, and the chip, remote or smart key is programmed to the car. Lost keys can usually be removed from the car's memory at the same time.
- Test everything. Doors, ignition or push-start, and remote buttons all checked before the locksmith leaves.
Erase the lost key from the car
If your keys may have been stolen, or lost somewhere they could be tied back to your car, ask for the old keys to be deleted from the immobilizer during programming. On most vehicles that stops the missing chip key or fob from starting the engine. The mechanical blade will still fit the locks, which is worth weighing if the keys were taken along with something showing your address.
What affects time and cost
Key technology
A basic metal key is quick. A transponder key adds programming. A push-to-start smart key adds a more expensive fob and often a longer procedure.
Lock and blade type
Standard edge-cut blades decode faster than laser-cut or sidewinder keys, which need specialty cutting.
Vehicle security
Some makes require security codes or extra steps before a new key can be added. We confirm feasibility before dispatch.
What does replacing lost car keys cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. All-keys-lost pricing depends heavily on the key type (metal, transponder, remote-head or smart key) and the vehicle's security system. We confirm the part and price for your year, make and model before dispatch, and anything unexpected is explained and approved before the locksmith continues.
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Ordering online? Your deposit is the $15–$25 service call ($15 inside city limits, $25 outside), paid at checkout. It is a flat fee on top of the service price; the Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy explain when it is refundable. Read how our pricing and after-hours rates work
Lost car keys FAQ
What is an all-keys-lost situation?
It means there is no working key for the vehicle at all, so nothing can be copied or used to authorize programming. The locksmith has to originate a new key from the lock or the vehicle's key code.
Do I need the VIN to get a new key made?
It helps a lot. The VIN identifies the exact vehicle and key system, and it's printed at the base of the windshield on the driver's side and on your registration. Share it when ordering if you can.
Can you make a key for my car if it's parked at a lot or apartment complex?
Usually, yes. The work is done at the vehicle. Make sure the locksmith can safely reach it and that the lot owner allows service vehicles.
Will my lost key still work after you program a new one?
On most vehicles, the locksmith can delete lost keys from the immobilizer so they can no longer start the car. The metal blade will still fit the locks unless they are rekeyed or replaced.
Is it cheaper to have the car towed to a dealer?
Sometimes the dealer's key price is competitive, but add the tow and the wait for parts or an appointment. Compare our confirmed price with the dealer's total, including towing.
Can you make a key for an older car with no chip?
Yes. Older vehicles with plain metal keys are often the simplest all-keys-lost jobs: open the car, decode or cut by code, and test.
What if I lose the key to a push-to-start car?
A new smart key can be programmed for most push-to-start vehicles. It requires the correct proximity fob for your model, so give us the year, make and model so we can confirm parts before dispatch.
Get a new key made where your car is
Have your year, make, model and VIN ready. We'll confirm the price, and that your vehicle doesn't need dealer-issued tools, before dispatch. Our lost car keys guide covers what to do in the meantime.
