Locked Out of Your House? A Calm, Step-by-Step Guide
If anyone vulnerable is inside or you smell gas or smoke, call 911 first. Otherwise, check other doors safely, contact anyone with a spare key, and call a mobile locksmith who can usually get you in without damage.
- When to call 911
- What to try before calling
- Non-destructive entry first
If someone is inside and can't get out
A lockout becomes an emergency when someone vulnerable is on the other side of the door: a baby or toddler alone, an older adult who has fallen, someone who isn't responding, or a pet with no air conditioning on a hot Tennessee afternoon. Smoke, a gas smell, or running water you can't stop also changes the priority.
- Call 911 if anyone may be hurt, unresponsive, or in danger, or if you smell gas or see smoke. Fire and police can force entry faster than anyone else.
- Stay at the door and keep talking to the child or person inside if you can.
- Call Instant Locksmith TN about ILT Lifesaver. It provides free emergency entry when a child, pet or at-risk adult — such as an elderly person who has fallen — is trapped in a residence and the technician confirms their life is in immediate danger. Neighbors and bystanders can report it, not just the homeowner.
Don't climb onto roofs, break windows, or put yourself at risk. Follow the 911 dispatcher's instructions.
Step by step when everyone is safe
- Take a breath and check every entry. Back door, garage side door, basement door, patio slider. Don't force a window — a broken pane or bent frame costs more than a locksmith.
- Try your garage keypad or app. If your garage door has a keypad or a smart opener, you may already have a way in.
- Think about spare keys. A roommate, partner, relative, trusted neighbor, or a coded lockbox you set up and forgot about.
- Renters: call your landlord or property manager. Many have a key or an on-call maintenance contact. Check your lease before having locks changed, because many leases require permission.
- Call a mobile locksmith. Tell them the type of lock (knob, lever, deadbolt, keypad or smart lock), whether the deadbolt is thrown, and your exact address. Order house lockout service online or call.
- Wait somewhere comfortable. In summer heat or winter cold, wait in your car, at a neighbor's, or at a nearby business.
What the locksmith will do
Most house lockouts are solved without drilling. A skilled locksmith uses picks, bypass tools and other non-destructive methods suited to the specific lock.
Knob or lever only
Typically the quickest lockout to open. Spring latches on many knobs can be opened without harming the lock.
Deadbolt thrown
Takes more skill and time. A quality deadbolt is built to resist manipulation, so it may take longer — that's the lock doing its job.
Keypad or smart lock
Often a dead battery or forgotten code. Many have a backup key cylinder or an emergency power contact; the approach depends on the model.
Drilling is a last resort, used only when non-destructive entry isn't practical, such as with certain high-security locks or a damaged cylinder. If a technician wants to drill before even trying anything else, that's a warning sign — see our locksmith scam guide.
Proving you live there
A responsible locksmith will not open a home for just anyone. Expect to be asked to confirm that you're authorized to enter.
Instant Locksmith TN does not necessarily require traditional proof of residence like a utility bill before helping — often that paperwork is locked inside with your keys. But we do verify authorization before opening anything. Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. See how verification works.
Have a photo ID ready if you can. If your ID is inside, tell us when you order so we can plan the visit.
What does a house lockout cost?
House lockouts from $80 — lower than every Middle Tennessee locksmith price list we found.*
Instant Locksmith TN standard house lockout price: $80+, confirmed before work begins. Every order adds the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside) service call, paid up front as the deposit, plus $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the nearest served city's center. If a lockout ends in drilling, you pay the service call + $200 only — no lockout fee on top.
- Ordered 7 AM–8 PM: standard pricing
- Ordered 8 PM–7 AM: 1.5× standard
- Federal holidays: 2× standard
- Federal holiday, ordered 8 PM–7 AM: 3× standard
Multipliers apply to the job (service, labor and parts); the $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and the $1.25/mile mileage fee (beyond 5 miles from the nearest served city's center) stay flat. No weekend surcharge. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
If the job turns out to need parts — for example, a broken lock that must be replaced — the technician explains it and gets your approval first. See full pricing or read what locksmiths charge in Tennessee.

After you're back inside
Ask yourself one question: where are my keys? If you simply left them on the kitchen counter, you're done. If they are lost or possibly stolen — especially with something showing your address — consider rekeying.
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing locks so old keys stop working. It's usually less expensive than replacing locks. Our guide on rekeying vs. replacing locks explains the difference, or go straight to lock rekeying service.
How to prevent the next lockout
- Give a spare to someone nearby you trust. A spare under the mat is the first place a burglar looks.
- Install a keypad deadbolt. A code can't be left on the counter. See keypad lock installation.
- Change smart-lock batteries on schedule. Most give a low-battery warning — don't ignore it.
- Get a key copied for each person in the household.
- Fix sticky locks early. A lock that's hard to turn is more likely to fail or break a key.
Locked out of house FAQ
Can a locksmith get me into my house without breaking the lock?
Usually, yes. Most residential lockouts are opened with non-destructive methods. Drilling is a last resort for certain high-security or damaged locks, and the technician should explain why before doing it.
I'm renting. Can I call a locksmith myself?
You can call a locksmith to get back in, but check your lease before changing or rekeying locks — many require landlord permission or a copy of the new key. Calling your property manager first may also get you in faster.
What if my ID is locked inside?
Tell us when you order. Instant Locksmith TN verifies authorization before opening anything, and we have access to investigative verification resources that help when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed.
My smart lock's battery died. Is that a lockout?
Often, yes. Many smart and keypad locks have a backup key cylinder or an emergency battery contact on the outside. If you don't have the backup key or the model doesn't offer one, a locksmith can help.
Once I am back inside, is rekeying worth it?
Only if your keys are lost or might be in someone else's hands. If they are just inside the house, there's no need. If they're missing, rekeying makes the old keys useless.
Does a lockout cost more on a holiday?
With Instant Locksmith TN, federal-holiday orders are billed at 2× standard pricing — on both the calendar date and the observed weekday — and holiday orders placed 8 PM–7 AM at 3×. Your price is confirmed before work begins.
