Locked Your Keys in the Car? What to Do Next

If a child or pet is inside, call 911 first. Otherwise, get somewhere safe, check for a spare key or remote-unlock app, and call a mobile locksmith who can open the door without damage.

  • Safety steps first
  • No coat hangers needed
  • Price confirmed before work

First: is anyone inside the car?

Before you think about keys, check the back seat. If a child, an older adult, or a pet is locked inside, the situation is an emergency, not an inconvenience.

Tennessee summers make this urgent. A closed car parked in the sun can heat up by roughly 20 degrees Fahrenheit in about 10 minutes, and cracking a window does little to slow it. Children and dogs overheat much faster than adults.

  1. Call 911 immediately if a child or animal is inside and shows any sign of distress — sweating, red skin, lethargy, crying that stops, panting, or not responding. Emergency responders can act faster than any locksmith.
  2. Stay with the vehicle and keep talking to the child or watching the animal so you can update the dispatcher.
  3. Then call us. Instant Locksmith TN's ILT Lifesaver program provides free emergency entry when a child, pet or at-risk adult is trapped and the technician confirms, by sight or sound, that their life is in immediate danger. Anyone can report it — the owner, a parent, or a passerby.
  4. Shade the car if you can with a windshield screen or by standing where you block direct sun — but do not put yourself in traffic.

Follow the 911 dispatcher's instructions. Do not do anything reckless that could injure you or the person inside.

Step by step when no one is in danger

  1. Get yourself safe. If you are on the shoulder of I-40, I-24, I-65 or any busy road, stay well away from traffic. At night, wait somewhere lit and populated if you can, such as inside a store.
  2. Check every door and the trunk. It sounds obvious, but a rear door or hatch is sometimes still unlocked.
  3. Look for a spare. Who has one — a partner, roommate, parent? If they are 20 minutes away, that may be your simplest and least expensive fix.
  4. Try your vehicle's app. Many newer vehicles from brands like GM, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai and others offer remote unlock through a connected app or subscription service, if it was set up beforehand.
  5. Check your coverage. Your auto insurance, an auto club membership, or some credit cards may include lockout assistance or reimbursement.
  6. Call a mobile locksmith. Give the year, make and model, your exact location, and whether the keys are visible inside. Order car lockout service online or call us.
  7. Have ID ready. A legitimate locksmith will confirm you are authorized to open the vehicle before unlocking it.

Why you should skip the coat hanger

Online videos make it look easy. On modern cars it rarely is, and the damage can cost more than the lockout itself.

Wiring and airbags

Door panels hold power-lock wiring, window motors and, on many cars, side-impact airbag components. Probing blindly with a wire can damage them.

Weatherstripping

Prying the top of the door tears or bends rubber seals, leading to wind noise and water leaks during the next Tennessee thunderstorm.

Paint and glass

Slim tools and wedges used carelessly scratch paint and can crack window glass. A broken window costs far more than a professional unlock.

A professional uses purpose-built tools, inflatable wedges and long-reach tools designed to work around those components. Experience matters more than the tool.

What happens when the locksmith arrives

Here is what a normal car lockout visit with Instant Locksmith TN looks like, so you know what to expect.

  1. Price confirmed first. Your price is confirmed before work begins, including whether after-hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM) or holiday pricing applies.
  2. Authorization check. The technician verifies you are authorized to access the vehicle. We do not necessarily require a title or registration in hand, but we do confirm authorization before opening anything.
  3. Non-destructive entry. Most car lockouts are opened without damage using specialized tools.
  4. Quick check. Once you're in, make sure your keys work and the locks and windows operate normally.

If your registration or ID is locked inside, tell us when you order. Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. Learn more on our verification page.

Keys locked in the trunk, or in a push-to-start car

Keys in the trunk are a different problem. On many vehicles, once the cabin is open the trunk release or fold-down rear seat solves it. On others, the trunk is isolated and needs its own approach. See our trunk lockout service.

Push-to-start vehicles are designed to prevent locking a proximity fob inside, but it still happens — often when the fob battery is weak or the fob is in a bag the car doesn't detect. The opening process is similar to any car lockout.

If the problem isn't a lockout at all — the key is lost, broken, or won't turn — you need a different service. Read our lost car keys guide or see broken car key extraction.

How to avoid the next lockout

  • Make a spare key now. A spare costs far less than an all-keys-lost job. See car key duplication.
  • Keep the spare somewhere useful. With a trusted person nearby, not in the glovebox.
  • Set up your car's app if your vehicle supports remote unlock.
  • Replace a weak fob battery. Low batteries cause many push-to-start mix-ups.
  • Build a habit: keys in hand before the door closes, every time.

Locked keys in car FAQ

Can a locksmith open my car without damaging it?

In most cases, yes. Professional car lockout tools are designed to open doors without harming paint, glass, weatherstripping or wiring. Some vehicles and situations are harder than others, and the technician will tell you before starting if there's any added risk.

Is it legal to break a car window to save a child or pet in Tennessee?

Call 911 first and follow the dispatcher's instructions. Emergency responders are trained to handle this, and breaking glass can injure you or the person inside. Then contact us about free ILT Lifesaver entry if the situation qualifies.

Do I need proof that I own the car?

A legitimate locksmith confirms you are authorized before opening any vehicle. Instant Locksmith TN does not necessarily require a title or registration in hand, but we verify authorization before opening anything. Have your ID ready if you can.

Will my car alarm go off when the locksmith opens the door?

It might. Many factory alarms trigger when a door opens without the key or fob. Once you are inside, using your key or fob normally will usually silence it.

How long does it take a locksmith to arrive?

Instant Locksmith TN generally aims to deploy within about one hour inside city limits across the Nashville metro and Murfreesboro. That is a goal, not a guarantee — it depends on demand, technician availability, traffic, weather, location and the job.

Does a lockout cost more at night?

With Instant Locksmith TN, orders placed between 8 PM and 7 AM are billed at 1.5× standard pricing, federal-holiday orders at 2×, and holiday orders placed 8 PM–7 AM at 3×. Your price is confirmed before work begins.

My keys are locked in the trunk. Is that the same job?

Not always. Some trunks open from the cabin once a door is unlocked; others need a separate approach. Tell us when you order so we can plan for it — see trunk lockout.
