Transponder Key Programming for Chip Keys That Won't Start the Car
If your key turns but the engine won't start, or a new key unlocks the doors but the car refuses to run, the transponder chip probably isn't paired with your car's immobilizer. Instant Locksmith TN programs transponder keys on site for any vehicle that doesn't require dealer-issued tools.

What a transponder key is
A transponder key has a small chip inside the plastic head. It has no battery. When you turn the key, a ring antenna around the ignition energizes the chip, the chip answers with a code, and the car's immobilizer lets the engine run only if that code is one it recognizes.
That's why a perfectly cut key can unlock the door but not start the car. The blade turns the lock; the chip is what the engine computer checks. Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile transponder key programming across Middle Tennessee for drivers whose chip keys need pairing.
Signs of a transponder problem
Security light
A key or lock symbol flashing on the dash when you try to start often means the car didn't read a valid chip.
Starts, then stalls
The engine fires for a second or two and shuts off. Many immobilizers allow a brief start before cutting fuel or spark.
Spare works, main doesn't
If one key starts the car and another doesn't, the failing key's chip is likely damaged or was never paired.
A dropped or water-damaged key can also lose its chip. On some keys the chip is a tiny glass capsule that can crack or fall out if the head is broken.
How transponder programming is done
- Identify the system. Year, make and model tell us the chip type and the programming method your vehicle supports.
- Supply the right key. The key or blank must carry a chip compatible with your car. Off-brand keys with the wrong chip are a common reason a key "won't program."
- Connect to the car. Most vehicles are programmed with diagnostic equipment through the port under the dash. Some need a security code or a timed procedure first.
- Pair every key. On many cars, all keys you want to keep should be present, because programming can erase keys that aren't there.
- Verify. Each key starts the car several times in a row before the locksmith packs up.
Programming vs. cloning
Cloning copies an existing chip's data into a new key; the car sees two identical keys. Programming adds a new, unique key to the car's memory. Cloning is handy when you're making a spare from a working key. Programming is required when there is no working key to copy, as with lost car keys, and it lets lost keys be deleted.
Not every problem is the key
If a known-good key with a programmed chip still won't start the car, the issue may be the ignition's antenna ring, the ignition cylinder, or another part of the immobilizer system. The locksmith will tell you what they find. Lock and cylinder trouble falls under ignition repair; some electrical faults are a job for a mechanic. If diagnosis shows a mechanic job, a $100 diagnostic fee applies.
What does transponder key programming cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. The quote depends on whether you need a new chip key cut and programmed, or only programming for a key you already bought, and on how involved your vehicle's procedure is. We confirm compatibility and price before dispatch; anything different on site is explained and approved before work continues.

Transponder key programming FAQ
Can you program a transponder key I bought online?
Yes, we program customer-supplied keys when the chip is right for your car. Keys bought online often have the wrong chip, a poor blade or a used chip that can't be reprogrammed. Send us the year, make and model and the key's details, and we'll tell you before dispatch whether it's likely to work.
Does a transponder key need a battery?
No. The chip is powered by the car's antenna when the key is in or near the ignition. If your key has buttons, those buttons use a battery for the remote, which is a separate system.
How do I know if my car key has a chip?
Most cars built from the late 1990s on use transponder keys. A thick plastic head is a clue, but some chip keys look plain. Your year, make and model is the reliable way to tell.
Will programming a new key erase my other keys?
On many vehicles, programming wipes keys that aren't present. Bring every key you want to keep so they can be re-paired in the same session.
Can a transponder key stop working on its own?
It can. Drops, water exposure or a cracked head can damage the chip. Occasionally the car's memory loses a key after battery or electrical work, and re-pairing fixes it.
Is transponder programming the same as key fob programming?
No. The transponder chip lets the engine run; the remote fob locks and unlocks the doors by radio. They are often in one key but are programmed through different procedures.
