What happens when you call us for a house lockout

Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile house lockout service for homes, apartments, condos and townhomes throughout Middle Tennessee. A locksmith drives to you with the tools to open most residential knob locks, lever sets and deadbolts.

We generally aim to deploy within about one hour in Nashville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Brentwood, Smyrna, La Vergne, Hendersonville, Gallatin, Goodlettsville, Mount Juliet, Spring Hill, Nolensville, White House and Fairview when feasible. That's a goal, not a promise: demand, technician availability, traffic, weather, your exact location and the type of lock all affect timing. We'll give you a realistic estimate when you order.

  1. Order online or call. Use our online order form or call. Tell us the address, which door, and what kind of lock is on it if you know (knob only, deadbolt, smart lock, storm door).
  2. Get the price. You'll see the price and deposit before you submit. If the job turns out different from what was described, we explain why and ask before changing anything.
  3. Verification on arrival. The locksmith confirms you're authorized to enter before opening anything. More on this below.
  4. Non-destructive entry first. We use picking and bypass tools that leave the lock working whenever the hardware allows it.
  5. You're in. If the lock had to be drilled, or you no longer trust who has keys, we can rekey or replace it on the same visit with your approval.

How we confirm you're allowed in

Opening a house door for the wrong person is the worst mistake a locksmith can make, so we verify authorization before opening anything. That protects you as much as anyone.

Many people locked out don't have a utility bill or lease in hand, because those papers are inside the house. Instant Locksmith TN does not necessarily require traditional proof of residence before helping. Instead we work to confirm identity and authorization in ways that fit the situation.

Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. We work with a licensed private-investigation agency that can help confirm who you are and your connection to the property when the usual documents aren't available. If we can't confirm authorization, we won't open the door. Read how verification works at Instant Locksmith TN for the full policy.

What makes some lockouts take longer

Deadbolt thrown

A locked deadbolt takes more work than a spring latch alone. Tell us if you locked the deadbolt on the way out.

High-security cylinders

Some locks are built to resist picking. Opening them can take more time or require drilling and a replacement cylinder.

Smart locks with dead batteries

Many smart locks have a backup key cylinder or emergency power terminals. We'll work with what the lock offers before anything destructive.

Storm and security doors

A locked storm or security door in front of the main door adds a second lock to open.

Chain or bar locks engaged

If an interior-only lock is set, there may be another way in. We'll look at all doors before anything else.

Apartments and HOAs

If you rent, your property manager may have a key or rules about lock work. It's worth a quick call to them first.

While you wait: what to check (safely)

Walk the house and check other doors, including the garage service door and any slider. If a household member or landlord has a spare key, a call may save you the visit.

Don't climb into windows, force a door or pry a lock. You can injure yourself, and a broken frame or lock usually costs more than a lockout call. If the garage has a keypad, try that before calling.

What does a house lockout cost?

House lockouts from $80 — lower than every Middle Tennessee locksmith price list we found.*

Standard price: $80+. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside. It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. Details are in our Payment & Deposit Policy. The time the order is placed changes the rate:

  • Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
  • After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
  • Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
  • Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
  • No weekend surcharge
  • Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center

Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.

The price is confirmed before work begins. If the lock is high-security, or you add rekeying or a new lock, that's quoted separately and approved first. See our full price list and rate rules.

*Based on our October 2026 review of Tennessee locksmith websites that publish prices. Our starting prices are listed before the service call and any mileage, as other companies' posted prices are. We only claim what we've found.

House Lockout FAQ

Do I need a utility bill or ID to get let back into my house?

Not necessarily. We must confirm you're authorized to enter, but we know your documents are often locked inside. We use other ways to confirm identity and authorization, including investigative verification resources when needed. If authorization can't be confirmed, we won't open the door.

Can you let me into a house I rent?

Yes, if we can confirm you're a current occupant authorized to be there. Opening the door is different from changing the lock: we never change a tenant's locks without the landlord's or property manager's authorization.

Will my lock still work after you open it?

In most cases, yes. Non-destructive methods leave the lock working with your existing keys. If drilling is required, we'll explain why first and can install a replacement on the spot with your approval.

Should I rekey after a lockout?

If you lost your keys somewhere you can't retrace, or they may have been taken with something identifying your address, rekeying is worth considering. It makes the old keys useless without replacing the lock.

My smart lock died and I'm locked out. Can you help?

Usually. Many smart locks have a backup key cylinder or an external emergency power option. Tell us the brand and model when you order so the locksmith comes prepared.

Do you charge more at night?

Orders placed between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM are billed at 1.5 times standard pricing, federal holiday orders at 2 times, and holiday orders placed after hours at 3 times. There is no weekend surcharge, and the price is confirmed before work begins.

What if I find my keys before the locksmith arrives?

Let us know as soon as possible. If the technician hasn't started driving to you yet, the service-call deposit is refunded in full; once they are on the way, it is non-refundable. See our Cancellation Policy.
