Instant Locksmith TN provides smart lock installation for houses, townhomes and condos throughout Middle Tennessee. Most smart locks are retrofit deadbolts that replace your existing deadbolt, so the work looks simple. The common failures come from the door, not the app.
A motorized bolt is weaker than your wrist. If the deadbolt rubs the strike, the motor stalls, drains batteries and may report "jammed." We check the door's alignment, adjust or move the strike as needed, and confirm the bolt extends fully on its own power before we set up the app with you.
Door prep check
We measure backset, bore size and door thickness. Most residential doors use a 2-1/8 inch bore with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, but older and custom doors vary.
Alignment and strike
The bolt must slide into the frame without pressure. We adjust the strike, deepen the bolt hole, or address sag so the motor isn't fighting the door.

Choosing a smart lock that fits your home
Smart locks connect in different ways, and the right choice depends on what you already use. Wi-Fi models work without a hub but use more battery. Bluetooth-only locks work at close range from your phone. Z-Wave, Zigbee, and newer Thread and Matter models connect through a home hub or compatible speaker.

Keep a way in when the electronics fail
Batteries die, Wi-Fi drops, and phones get lost. Before we finish, we confirm your lock's backup works, whether that is a key cylinder, a keypad that runs independently of the app, or an external battery terminal.

What does smart lock installation cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside. It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. Details are in our Payment & Deposit Policy.
Labor depends on whether the door is already prepped for a deadbolt, how much strike or alignment work is needed, and whether you supply the lock or buy hardware through us. If an undrilled door has to be bored (or a mortise pocket routed), door prep adds $60. Removing and disposing of the old lock is $5.

Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.

Can you install a smart lock I bought online?
Yes, in most cases. Tell us the brand and model when ordering. If it won't fit your door's prep, or needs a hub you don't have, we'll tell you before installation.
Why does my smart lock keep saying it's jammed?
Usually the bolt is rubbing the strike or the door has shifted, so the motor can't finish its throw. Adjusting the strike or door alignment typically fixes it. Weak batteries can cause the same symptom.
Will a smart lock work if the power or internet goes out?
Most smart deadbolts run on batteries, so a power outage doesn't stop them. Without internet, remote app features may stop, but keypads, Bluetooth and physical keys usually still work, depending on the model.
Do smart locks drain batteries fast?
Wi-Fi models generally use more battery than Bluetooth or hub-based models. Poor door alignment also shortens battery life because the motor works harder. Most apps warn you before batteries run out.
Can my smart lock use the same key as my other doors?
If the smart lock has a standard key cylinder, it can often be rekeyed to match your other locks. Some brands use proprietary cylinders, so tell us the model and we'll confirm.
Can you help set up codes for family or guests?
We'll help you pair the lock and set initial codes during installation and show you how to add or delete users. Ongoing account management stays with you in the lock's app.
