When it makes sense to change a safe combination
A combination is only as private as the last person who knew it. Common reasons Middle Tennessee customers ask for a change:
- You bought a home or business that came with a safe and the previous owner knows the code.
- An employee, contractor or roommate who knew the combination has left.
- The combination was written down, shared by text, or is still the factory default.
- There was a break-in or attempted break-in, even if the safe held.
- A family member who knew the code is no longer someone who should have access.
Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile safe combination changes for homeowners, gun owners and businesses throughout Middle Tennessee. The safe must be open, or openable, for us to change the combination. If you cannot get into it at all, that is a safe lockout first.
Electronic keypad locks
Most keypads allow a new user code once the safe is open, and many have separate manager and user codes. We set the new code, test it several times with the door open, and show you how to change it yourself next time.
Mechanical dial locks
Changing a dial combination usually means working on the lock from inside the door with a change key. Some dial locks are not user-changeable at all. We confirm which you have before quoting.
Lock replacement or upgrade
If a lock is worn, damaged or not changeable, replacing it may be the better fix. We offer dial-to-keypad conversion as an option, at our discretion, where the safe's lock mounting allows it. We confirm compatibility first.
We confirm the safe type first
A gun safe with an electronic lock, a fire-resistant document safe and a business depository safe each change differently. Tell us the lock type, the brand and model if visible, and whether you can open the safe right now. Texting or emailing a photo of the lock face, and of the back of the door if you can open it, saves time.
Some high-security safes and locks require specific tools or manufacturer procedures for a change; tell us what you have when ordering and we'll confirm the approach before dispatch. Dial combination work is never guaranteed to open a locked safe without damage, which is one more reason we only change combinations with the door open.
How the visit works
- You open the safe. We need the door open to work safely. A combination is never changed with the door closed.
- We identify the lock. Keypad or dial, manufacturer, and whether it supports a user change, a manager change, or needs a lock swap.
- You choose the new code. We will suggest avoiding birthdays, addresses and repeated digits. You enter or tell us the new code privately and we do not record it.
- We test, door open. The new combination is tried several times with the door open before anything is closed, so nobody gets locked out by a typo.
- We show you the next change. For keypad locks, we walk you through changing it yourself in the future.
Authorization still matters
Changing a combination controls who can open the safe, so we verify you are the owner or are acting for the owner, the business or the estate. For business safes, the request should come from someone with authority over the premises. For a safe that belongs to a household you share, we may ask who else has a claim to the contents.
Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. Read how it works on our verification page.
What affects the price
Keypad user-code changes are typically the simplest job. Dial combination changes take longer. Lock replacement adds parts and labor, and the right replacement depends on how the lock mounts in your safe; we stock safe locks. We confirm the price before work begins, and if what we find on site differs from what was described, we explain the change and get your approval first.
What does a safe combination change cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Lock replacement or a dial-to-keypad upgrade is quoted separately once we confirm what fits your safe; we stock safe locks.
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Safe combination change FAQ
Does the safe have to be open for a combination change?
Yes. We only change a combination with the door open so the new code can be tested safely. If you cannot open the safe, book a safe lockout and we can change the combination during the same visit.
Can every dial combination be changed?
No. Some mechanical dial locks are not designed to be changed by the user and may require a lock replacement. We confirm what you have before quoting.
Will you know my new combination?
You choose it. On keypads you can enter it yourself; on dial locks we need to set it, and we do not record it. Change it again afterward if you prefer.
Can you switch my dial lock to a keypad?
We offer dial-to-keypad conversion as an option, at our discretion. It depends on whether the safe's lock mounting and bolt work are compatible with an electronic replacement. Tell us the brand and model so we can check before dispatch.
We just bought a house with a safe in the basement. What should we do?
Treat the combination as known to the previous owners. If you can open it, order a combination change. If no one has the code, start with a safe lockout and ask for a new combination at the same time.
How often should a business change its safe combination?
Whenever someone who knew the code leaves or no longer needs access, and after any security incident. Many businesses also change codes on a regular schedule they set themselves.
