Electronic locks we work on

Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile electronic lock service for homes, rentals and businesses throughout Middle Tennessee. If it has a keypad, a motor, a circuit board or an app, it falls under this service, whether it's failing, locking you out, or due for new codes.

Keypad deadbolts and levers

Stand-alone code locks that run on batteries and don't need an app. Common on homes, rentals and back offices.

Smart locks

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread or Matter deadbolts controlled by a phone app, a hub or a voice assistant.

Electronic commercial locks

Stand-alone keypad and electronic locks on offices, storefronts and back doors, including models with user codes and audit features.

Common electronic lock problems

Dead batteries

The most common cause of a lockout with an electronic lock. Many models have a backup key cylinder, and many keypad locks have external terminals where a 9-volt battery can be held briefly to wake the keypad so a valid code works. Check your model's manual; not every lock has this.

Low-battery lockouts

Some locks keep warning, then stop throwing the bolt reliably. Batteries can be fine for the keypad lights but too weak for the motor, so a lock that "beeps but won't open" often just needs fresh cells.

Forgotten user codes

If a user code is lost but you still have the master or programming code, a new user code can usually be set. Without either, the lock may need a reset, which normally requires access to the inside of the door.

Lost master or programming code

Many locks can be returned to factory settings from the interior unit. That wipes every code, so plan to re-enroll each user afterward.

Motor or jammed bolt

A bolt that drags on the strike stalls the motor, drains batteries and may report "jammed." Strike or door adjustment fixes many of these; a failed motor or board means repair or replacement.

App, Wi-Fi or hub problems

Locks drop off networks after router changes, firmware updates or hub swaps. We can re-pair the lock on site with the account owner present; the app account itself stays with you.

What we can do

  • Open the door. Locked out because of an electronic lock? We start with the lock's own backup options and non-destructive entry. See house lockout or commercial lockout for how lockouts work.
  • Reset and reprogram. Factory resets, new master and user codes, and re-pairing to an app or hub, but only for an owner or someone the owner has authorized.
  • Repair. Strike and alignment work, replacing worn mechanical parts, and fixing loose or damaged keypads where the manufacturer supplies parts.
  • Replace. Swap a failed unit for the same model or an upgrade. For new installs, see smart lock installation and keypad lock installation.
  • Convert. Change a keyed lock to keypad entry or a keypad lock back to a standard deadbolt. Businesses with several doors may want keypad access control.

If every other option fails on a lock with no working backup, drilling the lock is the last resort, explained and approved by you before we start.

Authorization comes before any reset

Resetting a lock or adding a code gives someone a way in, so we treat it like opening a door. The technician confirms you're the owner or authorized by the owner before resetting, reprogramming or opening anything. Tenants may need landlord approval to change a lock the landlord manages. Read how we verify authorization.

Instant Locksmith TN is insured, and every technician is background-checked.

What to have ready when you order

  1. Brand and model. It's usually printed on the interior unit, under the battery cover, or in the app.
  2. Photos. One of the outside keypad and one of the inside unit if you can reach it. Photos help us confirm parts and the price before dispatch.
  3. Backup key. Tell us whether a key exists for the lock's cylinder and whether you have it.
  4. What changed. New batteries, a router change, a power outage, a firmware update, or a door that started sticking all point to different fixes.
  5. Who controls it. For rentals and businesses, who holds the app account or master code.

What does electronic lock service cost?

Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside. It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. Details are in our Payment & Deposit Policy.

The price varies by brand, model and problem. A battery-related lockout is a different job from a failed circuit board, and replacement parts or a new lock depend on what the manufacturer offers. That's why we quote after seeing the details.

  • Before 8 PM: standard
  • After 8 PM: 1.5×
  • Federal holidays: 2×
  • Federal holiday after 8 PM: 3×

Multipliers apply to the standard service price only; the $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call stays flat at any hour. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays.

Your price is confirmed before work begins, and any parts or replacement lock are approved first. See published prices and rate rules.

Electronic Lock Service FAQ

My keypad lights up but the bolt won't move. What's wrong?

Often the batteries are strong enough for the lights but too weak to drive the motor, or the bolt is binding on the strike. Fresh batteries fix many cases; if not, the strike, door alignment or motor needs attention.

Can you reset a keypad lock if I don't know the master code?

Usually, if you're the owner or authorized by the owner. Most models reset from the interior unit, which erases every code, so you'll set new codes afterward. We confirm authorization before resetting anything.

Why can't you give me an exact price for electronic lock repair over the phone?

The fix depends on the brand, model and fault. A battery lockout, a lost master code and a failed circuit board are very different jobs. With the model and a photo, we can quote before dispatch.

Do you work on electronic locks at businesses?

Yes. We service stand-alone keypad and electronic locks on offices, shops and back doors. For several doors managed together, ask about keypad access control systems.

Should I repair my smart lock or replace it?

Repair makes sense when the problem is alignment, batteries or programming. If the board or motor has failed, or the maker no longer supports the model, replacement is usually the better value. We'll explain both before you decide.

Can my electronic lock be swapped back to a regular deadbolt?

Yes. Most residential electronic deadbolts fit a standard door prep, so a conventional deadbolt can usually go in the same holes. We can rekey it to match your other locks.

Electronic lock acting up?

Order online with the brand, model and a photo, and we'll quote before dispatch. Or call and tell us what the lock is doing.
