Replace or rekey? Start here
Replacement means new hardware. Rekeying means new pins in the hardware you already have. If your only concern is who has a key and the lock works fine, rekeying usually does the job.
Replacement is the right call when the lock itself is the problem: it's damaged, failing, too weak, or you simply want something different. Instant Locksmith TN provides mobile residential lock replacement for homeowners and landlords throughout Middle Tennessee.
Signs a lock should be replaced
Forced or tampered with
Pry marks, a spun cylinder or a bent bolt after a break-in attempt mean the lock can't be trusted. See break-in lock repair if the door or frame was damaged too.
Worn internals
Keys that need jiggling, a cylinder that grinds, or a knob that turns without retracting the latch often point to internal wear.
Weather damage
Exterior locks face humid summers and freeze-thaw winters in Middle Tennessee. Corrosion and pitted finishes can eventually affect how the lock works.
Low-grade hardware
Builder-grade locks are often the minimum. Upgrading to a higher ANSI/BHMA grade adds durability on a high-traffic door.
Style or function change
Switching from knobs to levers, adding a keypad, or matching finishes across the house all call for new hardware.
Lock was drilled
If a lockout ended with a drilled cylinder, that lock needs a replacement cylinder or a whole new lock.
What gets replaced
A lock replacement can be as small as swapping one cylinder or as complete as new entry hardware on every exterior door. Typical jobs include:
Entry knobs and levers
Keyed exterior knobs and levers, including matched sets with a deadbolt.
Deadbolt swaps
Replacing an existing deadbolt in the same prep. Adding one where none exists is deadbolt installation.
Cylinders only
When the lock body is fine but the cylinder is damaged, sometimes only the cylinder needs replacing.
Choosing the new hardware
You can supply your own lock, or buy hardware from us. Steel, fiberglass and fire-rated doors, Kwikset SmartKey locks and interior privacy and passage sets are all in scope. If you buy your own, check the box for the backset and door thickness it supports, and keep the receipt in case it doesn't fit.
If you're replacing several locks, ask to have them keyed alike so one key works throughout. If you want keyless entry, our smart lock installation and keypad lock pages cover those options.
- Describe the problem. In the order form, tell us which locks, what's wrong, and whether you have the replacement hardware already.
- Review the price. Parts and labor are confirmed before work starts. If the door prep isn't standard, we explain the extra work first.
- Remove and install. The old lock comes off, the new one goes in, and the latch and bolt are lined up with the strike.
- Test. Every key, latch and bolt is tested with the door closed before the locksmith leaves.
What does residential lock replacement cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Hardware cost varies widely by brand and grade, so the total depends on the lock chosen, how many doors, and whether the door prep needs adjustment. Removing and disposing of an old lock is $5, and boring an undrilled door is $60. Rates by time the order is placed:
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Lock Replacement FAQ
Can I buy my own lock and have you install it?
Yes. Let us know when you order. Check that the lock supports your door's backset and thickness. If it doesn't fit, we'll tell you why before doing anything.
Is it better to replace or rekey after moving in?
If the existing locks work well, rekeying is usually enough to stop old keys. Replace if the locks are worn, low quality, or you want a different style or keyless entry.
Can you match my new locks to my existing key?
Often, if the new lock uses the same keyway as your current locks. We can pin the new cylinder to your existing key so you don't carry an extra one.
My lock was damaged in a break-in attempt. What should I do first?
If you're in danger, call 911. Otherwise contact police to report the incident before repairs if you plan to file an insurance claim. Then we can replace the lock and assess the door and frame.
Do you replace mortise locks on older homes?
Sometimes. Mortise locks fit a pocket cut into the door edge, and replacement parts depend on the make. Text or email us photos after you order and we'll confirm before dispatch.
Will my door need new holes drilled?
Usually not, since most residential locks share standard bore and backset sizes. Some hardware, including certain handlesets and smart locks, may need extra drilling, which we'd explain first.
