How Much Does a Locksmith Cost in Tennessee?

Locksmith prices in Tennessee depend mainly on the job, the hardware, the time of day and travel distance. Two Nashville locksmiths that publish price lists advertise car lockouts starting around $65–$85 (as published on October 5, 2026) — always ask for the total before dispatch.

The short answer

Locksmith prices in Tennessee depend on four things more than anything else: the type of job, the hardware involved, the time of day, and how far the technician has to drive. A simple car or house lockout is usually the least expensive call, and replacing a modern push-to-start key is usually among the most expensive.

This guide walks through what published numbers actually show, what drives the price up or down, and how to get a firm quote before anyone touches your lock. It also lays out Instant Locksmith TN's own published prices and fees.

What published prices actually show

Most Middle Tennessee locksmiths do not publish prices at all. In a review of roughly two dozen local operators, only two Nashville companies posted a price list online. Both list "starting at" prices with a plus sign, which means the real total can be higher once the trip, hardware and time of day are factored in.

The table below summarizes those advertised starting prices alongside national averages reported by consumer cost guides. Treat it as a reference range for comparing quotes — not as a price promise from anyone.

What drives the price of a locksmith call

Type of job

Opening a door without damage is mostly skill and time. Making or programming a key adds blanks, chips, fobs and equipment. Replacing hardware adds the cost of the lock itself.

Hardware and security level

A standard Kwikset or Schlage knob is quicker to service than a high-security cylinder, an electronic keypad, or a laser-cut vehicle key. Restricted keyways often need parts ordered through specific channels.

Vehicle year, make and model

An older car with a plain metal key is simple. Many newer vehicles use transponder chips or push-to-start proximity fobs that must be programmed to the car, and some require dealer-level procedures.

Time of day and holidays

Late-night and holiday calls cost more almost everywhere, because technicians are working outside normal hours. The difference is whether the company tells you that up front.

Distance and travel

A mobile locksmith drives to you. Some companies bundle the trip into the price; others add a separate "service call" or "trip" fee on top of the labor.

Surprises on site

A broken key stuck in the cylinder, a seized lock, or hardware that doesn't match what was described can change the job. A good locksmith explains the change and gets your approval before continuing.

The "$19 service call" pattern and why it costs more

Search for a locksmith in almost any Tennessee city and you will likely see ads promising a "$19 service call" or a similarly tiny number. That figure is usually only the fee to show up. It is not the price of opening your door or making your key.

Consumer advocates have warned about this pattern for years. Many of these listings are lead-generation sites with generic names and no real local presence; they route your call to whichever subcontractor is available. Once the technician arrives, the labor charge is added — often far above the published ranges above — and you are under pressure because you are locked out and they are already there.

Signs you are looking at bait pricing:

  • The ad shows only a service-call price, never a price for the actual job.
  • The person answering the phone says "locksmith services" instead of a business name.
  • They will not give you a total range before dispatching.
  • The technician arrives in an unmarked vehicle and immediately recommends drilling the lock.

Our guide to spotting locksmith scams covers these warning signs in more detail, including what to do if the price changes once someone is on site.

Lockout vs. rekey vs. replace: what you are paying for

Many people call for a lock change when what they actually need is cheaper. If you have your keys and simply want old keys to stop working — after a move, a breakup or a lost key ring — rekeying swaps the pins inside the existing cylinder so a new key works and the old ones don't. You keep the lock and pay for labor and pins.

Replacement makes sense when the lock is damaged, worn out, or you want a different style or security grade. See rekeying vs. replacing locks for a side-by-side comparison.

For cars, the biggest swing is whether you still have one working key. Copying an existing key is usually much less expensive than creating a key when all keys are lost, because an all-keys-lost job requires originating a key by code or by decoding the lock, then programming it to the vehicle. Our lost car keys guide explains that process step by step.

After-hours and holiday surcharges, explained

Almost every locksmith charges more at night and on holidays, but very few publish exactly how much. National cost guides report emergency surcharges in a range of roughly $50–$150 on top of the base price (Angi, as published on October 5, 2026), which makes it hard to compare offers.

A clear multiplier is easier to understand than a vague "emergency fee." If a company can't tell you how its night or holiday pricing works before dispatch, ask directly and get the answer in writing — a text or email is fine.

Instant Locksmith TN's published prices

Instant Locksmith TN publishes its starting prices instead of quoting only after arrival. Prices below are standard starting prices, before the service call and any mileage:

Instant Locksmith TN standard starting prices (October 2026)
JobStarting price
Car lockout$55+
House lockout$80+
Fleet vehicle lockout$75+ per vehicle
Rekeying (residential or commercial)$55 per cylinder
Laser-cut car key$50+ blade only; $160+ with transponder chip; $155+ remote-head/switchblade
Broken car key extraction$75+ extraction only; $155+ with a new cut key

Every visit also carries a flat service call of $15 inside incorporated city limits or $25 outside, paid up front as the deposit. Mileage is $1.25 per mile for each mile beyond 5 miles from the city center of the nearest served city; dispatch calculates it and shows it to you before work. Other services are quoted before dispatch.

Unlike a "$19 service call" ad, our service call is published next to the job price, so you can add the two together before you order. After-hours and holiday multipliers apply to the job — service, labor and parts — while the service call and mileage stay flat at any hour.

How Instant Locksmith TN prices its work

Car lockouts from $55+ — the lowest posted car-lockout price we found anywhere in Tennessee.*

House lockouts from $80+ — lower than every Middle Tennessee locksmith price list we found.*

Instant Locksmith TN quotes your price before work begins, using the job, your location and when you place the order. Our published time-of-day policy is simple:

  • Ordered 7 AM–8 PM: standard pricing
  • Ordered 8 PM–7 AM: 1.5× standard
  • Federal holidays: 2× standard
  • Federal holiday, ordered 8 PM–7 AM: 3× standard

Multipliers apply to the job (service, labor and parts); the $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage stay flat at any hour. No weekend surcharge. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.

If the job turns out different from what was described — a different lock, extra parts, or high-security hardware — the technician explains the change and gets your approval before continuing; if you decline, you pay only the service call. The $15–$25 service call is paid up front as the deposit, online or by phone. Details are in our Payment & Deposit Policy.

How to get an accurate quote in one call

The more precise you are, the more precise the quote. Have these ready before you call or order a locksmith online:

  1. Describe the job. "Locked out of my car with keys inside" is a different job from "lost my only key."
  2. Identify the hardware. For a car, give the year, make and model and whether it is push-to-start. For a door, note the brand on the lock face and whether it is a knob, lever, deadbolt or keypad.
  3. Give your exact location. A street address or cross streets lets the company account for travel.
  4. Mention anything unusual. A key broken in the lock, a damaged door, or a lock that spins freely all change the job.
  5. Ask for the total. Ask, "What will the total be, including the trip and any after-hours charge?" Get it in a text or email if possible.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Check for a spare first. A spare key with a family member, a property manager or a coded lockbox can save the call entirely.
  • Check roadside coverage. Some auto insurance policies, credit cards and auto clubs include lockout assistance.
  • Order between 7 AM and 8 PM if you can wait. If you are safe and the job isn't urgent, a daytime order avoids night pricing.
  • Rekey instead of replacing when the hardware is in good shape.
  • Make a spare car key now. Copying a working key costs far less than an all-keys-lost job later.
  • Bundle work. If you need several locks rekeyed or a deadbolt added, do it in one visit.

Locksmith cost FAQ

Why do locksmiths charge more after hours?

Night and holiday calls require technicians to work outside normal hours, often with short notice. Most companies charge more for that time; the difference is whether they tell you how much before they dispatch. Instant Locksmith TN bills orders placed between 8 PM and 7 AM at 1.5× standard pricing, federal holidays at 2×, and holiday orders placed 8 PM–7 AM at 3×.

Is a $19 locksmith service call real?

The $19 figure is usually just a fee to show up. The actual labor is quoted after the technician arrives, and it can be far higher than published local ranges. Ask for the total job price before anyone is dispatched.

Is it cheaper to rekey or replace a lock?

Rekeying is usually less expensive because you keep the existing lock and only change the pins. Replacement costs more because you pay for new hardware, but it makes sense if the lock is damaged, worn, or you want a stronger lock. See our lock rekeying service.

Why does a car key cost more than a house key?

Many car keys contain a transponder chip or are push-to-start proximity fobs that must be programmed to the vehicle. Some are laser-cut. Those blanks and the programming equipment cost more than a basic house key.

Do I pay if the locksmith can't open my lock?

Policies vary by company, so ask before dispatch. With Instant Locksmith TN, if you decline a changed price or decline drilling, you pay only the service call; see our Cancellation Policy and Service Terms.

Can the price change after the locksmith arrives?

It can if the job is different from what was described — for example, a different lock, a key broken inside the cylinder, or high-security hardware. A reputable locksmith explains the change and gets your approval before continuing. Instant Locksmith TN works this way on every job.

Does car insurance cover a locksmith?

Some auto insurance policies, auto club memberships and credit cards include lockout or key replacement coverage. Check your policy or card benefits; many reimburse you after you pay the locksmith directly.
