Mailbox Lock Replacement and Lockout Help

Instant Locksmith TN can open, rekey or replace locks on mailboxes you own, such as locking curbside and wall-mounted boxes, across Middle Tennessee. We also service privately owned mailbox banks for property managers and cut mailbox key copies. On a USPS-owned cluster box, the Post Office changes compartment locks, and we'll point you there.

First: who controls your mailbox lock?

The answer depends on who owns the mailbox, and getting this right saves you a wasted service call. Mailbox locks fall into three groups, and only one is routinely a locksmith job.

Mailbox typeWho usually handles the lock
Locking curbside or wall-mounted mailbox you bought and ownYou, as the owner. A locksmith can open, rekey or replace it.
USPS-owned cluster box unit (CBU) in a subdivisionThe Post Office changes compartment locks; lost keys are charged to the customer. Contact your local Post Office.
Privately owned cluster or apartment mailbox bankThe builder, property owner or manager who owns it. We service these banks for property managers.

USPS cluster mailboxes: contact the Post Office

Many newer Middle Tennessee subdivisions use cluster box units, the pedestal of numbered compartments at the end of the street. On a USPS-owned cluster box, the Post Office changes compartment locks (lost keys are charged to the customer), and you request that through your local Post Office. On a privately owned CBU, the builder, property owner or manager handles locks and keys.

We can replace locks only on mailboxes you or your property own, and never the USPS arrow lock or master door. No locksmith should touch those, and tampering with postal locks can carry federal penalties. If you're not sure who owns your unit, ask your Post Office or HOA before calling anyone.

Apartment and HOA-owned mailbox banks

If your apartment complex, condo association or HOA owns the mailbox bank, it's a privately owned unit: compartment locks are the owner's responsibility, and the property manager decides who changes them. Residents usually can't authorize a lock change on their own.

Instant Locksmith TN services mailbox banks for property managers: compartment lock changes at turnover, rekeys and key copies, often along with unit door work. See rental property lock changes for how we handle multi-unit jobs.

What we do on owner-controlled mailboxes

Locking residential mailboxes usually use a small cam lock: a short cylinder with a flat cam that swings behind the door frame. Cam locks come in many lengths, cam shapes and mounting styles, so we match the replacement to what's installed.

  • Lost key lockout. We open the mailbox with as little damage as practical and replace or rekey the lock.
  • Stuck or broken lock. Seized cylinders, snapped cams and broken keys are common on boxes exposed to Tennessee rain and summer heat.
  • Replace after a theft attempt. If the door was pried, we replace the lock; badly bent doors may need a new mailbox.
  • Upgrade the lock. A higher-quality cam lock can make a cheap locking mailbox harder to pry.

Most customers combine mailbox work with other jobs, such as a whole-house rekey, to make one visit count.

What does mailbox lock service cost?

Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside (plus a 4% online processing fee). It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. Details are in our Payment & Deposit Policy.

The price depends on whether the mailbox must be opened first, the lock type and length, and whether you need a rekey or a full replacement.

  • Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
  • After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
  • Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
  • Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
  • No weekend surcharge
  • Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center

Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.

Your price is confirmed before any work begins. If the job turns out different from what was described, we explain the change and get your approval first. See full pricing and rate details.

Mailbox Lock FAQ

I lost the key to my cluster mailbox. Can you make one?

If the Postal Service owns the cluster box unit, contact your local Post Office: it changes the compartment lock and charges the customer for lost keys. If the unit is privately owned by your builder, HOA or apartment complex, the property manager handles it and can order the work from us. If you still have one working key, we can cut copies.

Can you open my locking curbside mailbox without the key?

Usually, yes. If you own the mailbox, we can open it and replace or rekey the lock. Some low-cost mailboxes are damaged in the process, and we'll tell you before we start if that's likely.

Can my mailbox lock match my house key?

Most mailbox cam locks use a different, smaller key than door locks, so they generally can't share a key with your front door. Some models are available in matching keyways; ask when ordering.

Can I change the lock on my apartment mailbox myself?

Generally no. Apartment and HOA mailbox banks belong to the property, and the manager controls the locks. Ask the office for a lock change, especially if you just moved in.

Is it illegal to change a USPS mailbox lock?

The master door and arrow lock on postal cluster units belong to USPS, and tampering with them can carry federal penalties. On USPS-owned units, the Post Office changes compartment locks; on privately owned units, the builder, property owner or manager handles them.

Why did my mailbox key stop turning?

Weather, dirt and wear are common causes. Graphite or a lock lubricant made for cylinders may help; avoid heavy oils that attract grit. If the key is bent or the cam is broken, the lock needs replacing.

Locked out of your own mailbox?

If you own the box, order online and we'll confirm the price before we open or replace anything.
