Why the closer matters for your lock
A door closer is what pulls a commercial door shut after every use. When it stops doing that job well, the lock usually gets blamed. A door that stops an inch short of the frame isn’t latched, and a door that isn’t latched isn’t locked.
That makes closer service a security repair as much as a comfort one. It’s also about people: a door that slams can catch fingers and heels, and a door that’s too heavy is hard for many customers and employees to open.
What we adjust
Most hydraulic closers have separate adjustment valves, and each controls a different part of the door’s travel. Turning the wrong one is the most common reason a DIY adjustment makes things worse.
Sweep speed
Controls how fast the door swings through most of its closing arc. Too fast and the door slams; too slow and the door blocks traffic and lets heat or cold in.
Latch speed
Controls the last few inches before the door meets the frame. It’s set to give the door enough momentum to push the latch past the strike and any weatherstripping.
Backcheck
Cushions the door near full open so wind or a hard push doesn’t throw it into the wall or rip the closer arm loose. Some closers also have a delayed-action setting.
Leaking closers: replace, don’t adjust
An oily film on the closer body, drips on the floor below, or a door that suddenly slams no matter how the valves are turned usually means the closer has lost hydraulic fluid. The valves regulate fluid flow, so once the fluid is leaking out, the closer can’t hold an adjustment.
At that point replacement is the reliable fix, and we supply the replacement closer. We match the replacement to the door’s size, weight, location and mounting style (regular arm, top jamb, or parallel arm), and set spring power separately from speed so the door latches without being too hard to open.
Problems we diagnose on site
Door won’t close all the way or won’t latch. Door slams or closes too fast. Door is too hard to open. Closer arm loose, bent or disconnected. Hold-open arm won’t hold or won’t release. Closer body leaking oil. Door bouncing back off the frame.
Sometimes the closer isn’t the problem at all. A sagging hinge, a bent frame or a misaligned strike can stop a door from latching even with a perfect closer, so we look at the whole door before recommending parts.
- Describe the door. Order online or call. A photo of the closer and arm (texted or emailed after you order), plus whether it’s an exterior or interior door, helps.
- Approve the price. You see the price and deposit before you submit, and we confirm before work begins.
- On-site check. We watch the door cycle, check for leaks, arm damage, hinges and strike alignment.
- Adjust or replace. If the job differs from what was described, we explain the change and get your approval first.
- Fine-tune and test. We set sweep, latch and backcheck so the door latches reliably from full open.
What does door closer repair cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Adjustment-only visits generally cost less than replacement. The final price depends on whether a new closer is needed, the closer size and finish, the arm style, and whether the door or frame needs prep for the new mounting pattern.
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside. It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. See our Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy. See how our pricing works.
Accessibility and fire doors
Closers on accessible routes and on fire-rated doors have requirements for how fast the door closes and how hard it is to open, and fire doors generally must be self-closing and self-latching. We follow applicable code when we adjust or replace a closer. Your local code official makes the final determination, so tell us if a door was flagged in an inspection.
On a fire-rated door, we won’t remove a closer or install a hold-open that isn’t appropriate for that door.
Door closer FAQ
Can a leaking door closer be repaired?
In practice, a leaking hydraulic closer is replaced rather than resealed. Once fluid is escaping, the closer can’t hold its speed settings, so a new closer is the reliable fix.
Why won’t my door close the last few inches?
The latch speed may be set too slow, spring power may be too low for the door, or something else is dragging: a sagging hinge, a misaligned strike, or new weatherstripping. We check those before adjusting the closer.
Can you make my door easier to open?
Often, yes. Spring power can be reduced on many closers, but there is a balance: the door still has to close and latch reliably. We set it so the door is as easy to open as possible while still latching.
Do you replace closers on glass storefront doors?
Yes. We replace surface-mounted closers and the concealed overhead and floor closers used on many aluminum storefront doors, and we supply the replacement closer. Tell us if you can’t see a closer on the door so we bring the right type.
Can you add a hold-open feature to my closer?
On many non-fire-rated doors, yes, using a hold-open arm. Fire-rated doors generally can’t be held open mechanically, so tell us which door it is and we’ll confirm what is appropriate.
Is door closer service part of a regular locksmith visit?
It can be. If we’re already on site rekeying or repairing a lock and the closer is causing latching problems, ask us to look at it during the same visit.
Stop the slamming, fix the latch
Send us a photo of the closer and we’ll confirm the price before any work begins.
