High-Security & Restricted Key Duplication
Restricted and patented high-security keys generally can only be copied with the registered owner’s authorization, through the dealer or channel that controls that key system. Instant Locksmith TN helps Middle Tennessee homes and businesses identify their key, confirm what authorization it needs, and get copies or a new controlled system the right way.
- Authorization respected
- Key identified before dispatch
- Price confirmed before work
Why a hardware store won’t copy your key
High-security keys are designed to be hard to copy. Many use restricted or patented keyways, meaning the blanks aren’t sold to the public and are distributed only through authorized dealers. Self-serve kiosks and ordinary key machines generally can’t cut them.
That’s the whole point. A restricted key system lets the owner decide exactly how many keys exist and who can order more.
Restricted keyways
Blanks are controlled by the manufacturer and its authorized dealers rather than sold on the open market.
Patented keys
The key design itself is patent-protected, adding legal protection against unauthorized blanks while the patent is in force.
Authorization records
Copies typically require a key card, ID, or a signature that matches an authorized person on file with the controlling dealer.
What you’ll usually need
If your system was set up by a dealer, you may have received an authorization or key control card with a number on it. Copies are generally ordered by presenting that card, along with ID matching the authorized signer on file. Businesses often have specific employees listed as authorized to approve new keys.
If your key system is controlled by a particular dealer, copies may need to come through that dealer. We’ll tell you that honestly rather than attempt something the system is designed to prevent. Lost the card? The manufacturer or original dealer may be able to help confirm ownership.
Moved into a property with high-security locks?
New owners often find high-security cylinders but no authorization card. Since you can’t confirm who controls the system or how many keys exist, the cleanest fix is often a new controlled key system: new cylinders or cores, with authorization set up in your name.
We verify authorization before changing any locks. Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed. See how verification works.
Brand and system availability
Instant Locksmith TN is not an authorized dealer for any high-security brand. We do service restricted systems set up by other dealers, subject to each system's authorization rules, which means some copies must still be ordered through the controlling dealer. Tell us the brand on the key head and any number stamped on it when you order, and we’ll confirm what’s possible before dispatch.
- Identify the key. Brand, any stamped number, and whether you have an authorization card. Add it when you order online; don’t post a full photo of the key cuts anywhere public.
- Confirm authorization. We confirm you’re the authorized person and what the controlling channel requires.
- Price confirmed. You see the price and deposit before submitting; we confirm before work.
- Copies or a new system. We get you authorized copies where possible or recommend a new controlled system if not.
What does high-security key duplication cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Restricted blanks cost more than standard blanks, and some keys must be ordered rather than cut same-day. Price depends on the brand and system, the number of keys, and whether a new controlled system is the better option.
- Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
- After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
- Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
- Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
- No weekend surcharge
- Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center
Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.
Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside (plus a 4% online processing fee). It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. See our Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy. See how our pricing works.
Restricted key FAQ
Why does my key say “Do Not Duplicate” but a store copied it anyway?
A stamp is just a request. Real copy control comes from a restricted or patented keyway, where blanks aren’t available to the public and copies require authorization through the controlling dealer.
What is a key control card?
It’s a card issued with many high-security key systems that identifies the system and is presented, often with ID, to order more keys. Keep it somewhere safe and separate from your keys.
I lost my authorization card. Can I still get keys?
Often the manufacturer or original dealer can confirm ownership through their records. If that isn’t possible, a new controlled key system set up in your name may be the practical answer.
Can you copy a high-security key the same day?
It depends on the brand and whether the blanks are available locally. Some restricted keys must be ordered through the controlling channel. We tell you the expected timing before you commit.
Is a high-security key system worth it for a home?
It can be if you want to control exactly who has keys, such as for rentals, home offices or properties with frequent contractors. Many systems also add resistance to picking and bumping.
Who at my company can order more keys?
Usually only the people listed as authorized on the key system’s records. If those people have left, update the authorization with the controlling dealer before ordering keys.
