Who can have a storage unit lock removed

The person named on the rental agreement, the renter of record, is generally the only person a facility will allow to have a lock cut. Facility management usually needs to verify that person's identity and account status, and many facilities want written or recorded authorization before a locksmith touches a lock.

If you are a spouse, relative or business partner but not on the rental agreement, the facility will typically require the renter of record's authorization, or the authority of an estate in the case of a deceased renter. Some facilities require a staff member to be present, and some only allow approved vendors. Their rules come first.

Instant Locksmith TN provides storage unit padlock removal throughout Middle Tennessee for renters who have cleared it with their facility. We verify authorization before removing anything. Our access to investigative verification resources gives us an unusual additional capability when identity or ownership needs to be confirmed.

We do not remove facility overlocks

If the facility has placed its own lock on your unit, often for a past-due balance, that lock belongs to the facility. We will not remove or defeat it. Resolve the account with the office and they will remove their lock. If your own lock is also on the door and you have lost its key, we can then remove yours with their approval.

Lock types we see at storage units

Most self-storage doors use a hasp with one of three lock types, and each comes off differently.

Disc locks

The round, shrouded locks many facilities recommend. The shackle is mostly covered, which resists bolt cutters, so removal usually means drilling the cylinder. The lock is destroyed.

Standard padlocks

Exposed-shackle padlocks are typically quicker to remove. The lock is generally not reusable afterward.

Cylinder locks

Some facilities use a built-in cylinder lock in the door latch. Removal or replacement may need the facility's involvement since the hardware is theirs.

How a removal visit works

  1. Get your paperwork or authorization. Have your rental paperwork ready, or get management authorization, then ask about office and gate hours.
  2. Order and describe the lock. Tell us the facility, the unit number, and the lock type. Texting or emailing us a photo helps.
  3. Confirm price. You see the price before dispatch. Disc locks and heavy-duty locks may take longer than a basic padlock.
  4. Meet us at the unit. Bring photo ID and your rental agreement if you have it. The facility may want a staff member present.
  5. Remove and replace. Once your lock is off, put a new one on before you leave. Bring one, or buy one from us; we sell padlocks.

Plan around gate hours

Most facilities have set gate hours, and your gate code may not work outside them. We can only reach your unit when the gate is open to you. That means late-night removal is often not possible even though we are open 24/7 for other jobs, so check the facility's hours before you order.

What does storage unit lock removal cost?

Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Disc locks and high-security padlocks can take longer than standard padlocks. A replacement padlock, if you buy one from us, is extra and confirmed before work begins.

Storage unit lock removal FAQ

Do I need the storage facility's permission to have my lock removed?

We need either management authorization or your rental paperwork showing the unit is yours. Many facilities also have their own rules, so contact the office before ordering; we confirm authorization before removing anything.

I'm not on the rental agreement. Can you remove the lock for me?

Not without the renter of record's authorization, or proper estate authority if the renter has died, and the facility's approval. Facilities set these rules to protect renters.

Will you remove the lock the facility put on my unit?

No. Facility overlocks belong to the facility. Settle the account with the office and they will remove it.

Can my disc lock be removed without destroying it?

Usually not. Disc locks are built to resist cutting, so removal typically means drilling the cylinder, which ruins the lock. Plan on a replacement.

Can you come after the facility's gate closes?

Only if the facility gives you access after hours. Most gate codes stop working outside posted hours, so schedule within them.

What should I bring to the appointment?

Photo ID, your rental agreement or account information, and a new lock to put on after removal, unless you want to buy a padlock from us.

Cleared it with your facility?

Order online, tell us the lock type and unit, and see your price before dispatch.
