The garage is often the weakest way into a home

Instant Locksmith TN provides garage lock service for homes throughout Middle Tennessee. Many homeowners lock the front door carefully, then leave the door between the garage and the kitchen secured only by a knob lock, or not at all.

If the overhead door is opened, that interior door is the last barrier into the house. Treat it like an exterior door: a solid deadbolt, a reinforced strike, and keys you control.

House-to-garage door

Add or replace a deadbolt, rekey to match your front door, or fix a latch that no longer catches. Some of these doors are fire-rated; we keep compatible hardware in mind.

Side service door

Detached garages and workshops often have a cheap exterior door. We replace worn knobsets, add deadbolts and reinforce strikes.

Manual overhead door lock

The T-handle lock on the outside of many overhead doors drives bars into the tracks. We replace broken handles and cylinders and rekey them.

Common garage lock problems we see

  • T-handle won't turn. The cylinder is seized or the lock bars are rusted or misaligned with the track slots. Sometimes adjustment fixes it; often the lock assembly is replaced.
  • Garage locks need a different key. Many homes end up with three or four keys. We can usually rekey garage cylinders to match the house when keyways are compatible.
  • Moved in and don't know who has keys. Previous owners, contractors and neighbors may still hold garage keys. Rekey along with the rest of the house.
  • Remote lost or stolen. Opener work can be discussed when you order, and in the meantime we can secure the house-to-garage door so a missing remote doesn't get anyone into the house.

Detached garages, sheds and workshops

Detached outbuildings across Middle Tennessee often store tools, mowers and equipment worth more than people realize. They also sit out of view.

Upgrading to a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt, using long screws in the strike, and choosing a quality padlock and hasp for barn-style doors all help. For padlocks you can't open, see padlock removal. For deeper upgrades across the property, see home security lock upgrades.

  1. Describe the door. Tell us which door (house entry, side door or overhead), and text or email us a photo of the lock if you can.
  2. Confirm price. Your price is confirmed before work begins.
  3. Repair, rekey or replace. We fix what's repairable and explain when replacement is the better value.
  4. Test with the door. We check the lock with the door closed and latched, not just on the bench.

What does garage lock service cost?

Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside (plus a 4% online processing fee). It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. Details are in our Payment & Deposit Policy.

Cost depends on which door and lock type, whether parts are rekeyed or replaced, and any strike or alignment work needed.

  • Standard rate: orders placed 7 AM–8 PM
  • After hours (orders placed 8 PM–7 AM): 1.5×
  • Federal holidays (calendar date and observed date): 2×
  • Federal holiday, after hours: 3×
  • No weekend surcharge
  • Mileage: $1.25/mile beyond 5 miles from the city center

Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. The after-hours rate is set by the time the order is placed. Holidays are U.S. federal holidays, billed on both the calendar date and the observed weekday.

Your price is confirmed before any work begins. If the job turns out different from what was described, we explain the change and get your approval first. See full pricing and rate details.

Garage Lock FAQ

Can you rekey my garage door lock to match my house key?

Often, yes, if the garage cylinder uses a compatible keyway. Many T-handle overhead locks use their own cylinders, so we'll confirm on site and recommend a replacement cylinder if rekeying to match isn't possible.

Should the door from my garage to my house have a deadbolt?

It's a good idea. That door is the final barrier if someone opens the overhead door. A deadbolt with a reinforced strike makes forced entry much harder.

Can you help with my garage door opener or springs?

Ask when you order. Garage door opener and spring work can be discussed at that point, along with the locks on the overhead, side and house-entry doors.

My overhead door has a lock but I never use it. Should I?

If the door has an opener, engaging the manual lock bars can block the opener and strain the motor. Many homeowners leave the manual lock disengaged and secure the house entry door instead. Follow your opener maker's guidance.

Can you get me into a locked detached garage?

Yes, if you're authorized to access the property. We'll verify authorization before opening anything, then rekey or replace the lock if keys are lost.
