Keypad Lock Installation for Homes & Small Offices
Instant Locksmith TN installs keypad deadbolts and keypad levers on homes and light-commercial doors across Middle Tennessee, so you can unlock with a code instead of a key. Unlike a smart lock, a keypad lock doesn’t need Wi-Fi, an app or a hub to work.
- No app or Wi-Fi required

Keypad lock or smart lock?
The two get lumped together, but they solve different problems. A keypad lock is self-contained: codes are stored in the lock and entered on the lock. A smart lock connects to your phone, a hub or the internet so you can lock, unlock and manage access remotely.
If you mainly want to stop carrying keys, let a dog walker in, or give kids a code after school, a keypad lock is often simpler with fewer things to set up. If you want remote unlocking, notifications or integration with a home system, see smart lock installation.
| Keypad lock | Smart lock | |
|---|---|---|
| How you unlock | Code on the keypad (most also have a key) | App, phone proximity, code, or voice depending on model |
| Needs Wi-Fi or app | No | Usually, for remote features |
| Remote access changes | No; codes are changed at the lock | Yes, on most connected models |
| Setup | Install and program codes | Install, pair, connect and program |
Types of keypad locks we install
Keypad deadbolts
Replace or add a deadbolt on an exterior door. Your existing knob or handle can stay, or we match a new one.
Keypad levers and knobs
For interior doors, garages, offices or doors where a deadbolt isn’t used. Some lock automatically when the door closes.
Mechanical pushbutton
Battery-free locks for gates, sheds, side doors or light commercial use. For multi-door business setups see keypad access control.
Fit matters more than features
Most residential keypad deadbolts are made for standard door preps, but older doors, thick doors, metal doors and storm doors can cause trouble. The backset, bore size and door thickness have to match, and the deadbolt has to line up with the strike so the motor or mechanism isn’t straining against the frame.
A keypad lock that drains batteries quickly is often a door alignment problem, not a bad lock. We check the bolt throws freely before we program anything.
Codes and security habits
Use different codes for different people when your lock supports it, so you can delete one without changing everyone’s. Avoid obvious codes like addresses or birthdays, and wipe smudges off the buttons occasionally so worn keys don’t give the code away.
If you’re keeping a key override, consider rekeying it to match your other locks so the house still runs on one key.
- Choose your lock. Use your own lock or ask us to supply one. Note which when you order online.
- Price confirmed. You see the price and deposit before submitting.
- Install and align. We fit the lock, adjust the strike, and confirm smooth operation.
- Program and teach. We set the master code and user codes and show you how to change them.
- Anything unexpected? If the job differs from what was described, we explain the change and get your approval first.
What does keypad lock installation cost?
Standard price: quoted before dispatch. Price depends on whether you supply the lock, whether the door needs new holes or modification, door material, and whether the key override is rekeyed to match your other keys. If an undrilled door has to be bored (or a mortise pocket routed), door prep adds $60. Removing and disposing of the old lock is $5.

Multipliers apply to everything on the job (service, labor, parts and hardware) except the flat $15 (inside city limits) or $25 (outside city limits) service call and mileage. Online orders pay the $15–$25 service call at checkout as the deposit: $15 inside city limits, $25 outside (plus a 4% online processing fee). It is a flat fee added to the service price, and the time-of-day multipliers never apply to it. See our Payment & Deposit Policy and Cancellation Policy. See how our pricing works.
Keypad lock FAQ
What’s the difference between a keypad lock and a smart lock?
A keypad lock stores and checks codes at the door with no app or internet needed. A smart lock connects to a phone, hub or Wi-Fi for remote control and alerts. Both can use codes; only a smart lock is managed remotely.
Can you install a keypad lock I bought online?
Usually, yes. Tell us the brand and model when ordering so we can confirm it fits your door. If it doesn’t fit, we’ll explain before doing any work.
Can I put a keypad deadbolt on a metal or fiberglass door?
Often, yes, if the door is prepped for a standard deadbolt. If it needs new boring, door prep is $60 and we confirm before drilling.
Do keypad locks still have a key?
Many do, for backup entry. Some models are keyless. If yours has a key cylinder, we can often rekey it to match your house key.
How long do keypad lock batteries last?
It varies by model and how often the door is used. A door that binds makes the motor work harder and shortens battery life, so proper alignment helps.
Is a keypad lock good for a rental property?
It can be, because codes can be changed between tenants without rekeying. For guest-turnover rentals, see our short-term rental keyless entry service.
Ready to go keyless at the front door?
Tell us the lock and door; we’ll confirm fit and price before any work begins.
