Ignition Cylinder Replacement at Your Vehicle
When an ignition lock cylinder is broken, forced or worn beyond repair, Instant Locksmith TN replaces it on-site in Middle Tennessee — and for most vehicles we can set the new cylinder to work with the key you already have, so you don't end up carrying two keys.

When replacement is the right call
Not every bad ignition needs a new cylinder. If yours is stiff or sticky but intact, start with ignition repair — servicing or re-keying is often enough.
Replacement makes sense when:
- The cylinder was punched, drilled or forced during a theft attempt
- The key spins freely and nothing engages
- Internal parts are broken or the housing is cracked
- A key piece is glued or jammed in so badly it can't be extracted cleanly
- Wear is so advanced that repair wouldn't last
Matched to your key vs. a dealer-style swap
Re-keyed to your key
The new cylinder's wafers are set to your existing key code. One key still runs the doors, trunk and ignition. This is what we aim for.
New cylinder, new key
The cylinder keeps its own key. You end up with one key for the ignition and another for the doors — unless the door locks are re-keyed too.
Whole set re-keyed
After a theft or lost keys, you may want the ignition and doors all on a new code so old keys stop working. Ask us about this when ordering.
What the replacement involves
- Order with your vehicle details. Request an ignition cylinder replacement with the year, make, model and whether you still have a working key.
- We verify authorization. Ignition work gets the same ownership and authorization check as any vehicle key job — see our verification standards.
- Remove the old cylinder. Column trim comes off. On many vehicles, an intact cylinder releases with the key in the On position; a damaged one may need to be drilled or extracted.
- Code the new cylinder. We load the wafers to your key's code so your key operates it.
- Install and check security. Some vehicles have a transponder antenna ring or other security component around the cylinder; it's refitted and checked so the immobilizer still reads your key.
- Test every position. Lock, Accessory, On, Start and key release — tested with you present.
After a theft attempt
A forced ignition is one of the most common reasons for this job. If your car was broken into, take photos and file a police report before repairs if you plan to make an insurance claim.
Check the doors as well — the same thief often damages a door lock to get in. We can handle door lock repair on the same visit. If keys were stolen too, consider re-keying everything so the stolen key is useless.

Ignition Cylinder Replacement FAQ
How do I know if I need a new ignition cylinder or just a repair?
If the cylinder is intact and the problem is stiffness or sticking, repair or re-keying often works. If the key spins freely, the cylinder was forced, or internal parts are broken, replacement is the reliable fix. We diagnose before recommending either.
Can you replace the ignition cylinder if I lost all my keys?
Often, yes. We can make a new key from the vehicle's key code or a lock decode and either code a new cylinder to it or re-key the existing one. Programming the chip is a separate step. Tell us it's an all-keys-lost situation when ordering.
Will my car still start with my old chip key after replacement?
In most cases, yes. The transponder in your key talks to the immobilizer, not the lock cylinder, so a properly coded and installed cylinder lets your existing key start the car.
Can the new cylinder be keyed to match my door locks?
That is usually the goal. We set the new cylinder to your existing key code so one key works the doors, trunk and ignition.
How long does an ignition cylinder replacement take?
It depends on the vehicle and the condition of the old cylinder. A straightforward swap is much quicker than drilling out a damaged one. We'll give you a realistic estimate once we know the vehicle and what happened.
Do push-to-start cars have an ignition cylinder?
No. Push-button start vehicles use a start button and a proximity key instead of a key cylinder in the dash. If the car won't recognize your fob, see key fob programming.
